Venice or Amsterdam in early March?

I've been to both -- my girlfriend has been to neither. We're in our late 20's, live in New York City -- I'm American, but have travelled Europe extensively -- she's European (lived there for 20 years), but has only been to 5 or 6 cities in Europe.

We want a luxurious, romantic trip, but are a bit worried about the weather. We'll be starting with a few days in Paris -- from there, we were thinking of going to Amsterdam or Venice.

Venice was absolutely AMAZING when I went (late April?). However, the weather (and high possibility of floods) may mean that it's better visited at some other time of the year. Amsterdam may be easier and cheaper to get to, as well (plus, it may be relatively easy to fly out open-jaw to get back to NYC).

Any thoughts on the two? Where would you go to spend a few days, given that it's early March? I'm open to other ideas, as well, though I think I've put some decent thought into selecting Venice and Amsterdam.

Thanks so much for your comments.

We went to Amsterdam our first time in early March. It was cold to us(from Florida) and we had to buy some caps for our heads (Ajax logo at local sports store)... The warmest day just made it to 50F. But we did everything we planned and had a good time.

Hello odonnela, Venice will no doubt be at least cold in March, and you will probably have some rain.

However Venice is beautiful regardless. And I cannot imagine that Amsterdam would have better weather then Venice.

So I would choose the city that interest you the most. And bring some clothes for chilly weather. And have fun!

Well I loved Venice and did not care for Amsterdam much, so for me it would be no contest. Secondly, I find it hard to think of Amsterdam as a <romantic> city at best.

Venice for the weather. Or if you will be in Paris anyway, give up another large city and go skiing.
