Venice location recommendations

We'll be staying in Venice for 2 nights in May 2012. Is the area of Dorsoduro convenient to get around from?

Generally yes, but it depends.
What are your priorities?

Just general walking around/touring venice. the more central areas of Venice seem to be extremely high priced

I really like Dorsoduro. It's quieter and less crowded than around the Piazza San Marco or the Rialto. But easily walkable: Venice isn't that big.

I agree with Mimar. Hotels in Dorsoduro also tend to be less expensive than those near St. Marks or the Rialto Bridge.

Look at Hotel Messner in Dorsoduro for good value but still close to the action.

You can try these apartments and tell the owner, Ana, that Bianca sent you. http://www.palazzofoscarini.it/

Dorsoduro is great because it has a slower feel, more boutiques where locals shop, and great little restaurants where both the students and families go to since it's less expensive than Rialto/S.Marco area and just about a 15-20 minute walk to the main attractions.

The low season rates for the apartments are about $100/nt and can go up to $180/nt.

Try searching on venere.com.

Hey Bianca, that's my favorite apartment in Venice! I've stayed there many times and love the architecture and location. It's my "home" in Venice.

Try www.palazzoguardivenice.com

I nice small hotel in Dorsoduro in a very convenient location. The rooms pictures on the website are accurate. Price is good and rooms 4 and 5 are extra large and have wonderful views - those rooms are well worth the small extra cost. Like most hotels in Venice, don't judge it by the outside.

Agree Palazzo Guardi is good, also we love Pensione Seguso for its fabulous convenient location and Merchant Ivory charm.

Just a heads up:

If you're going to Venice anytime between May 12th-20th, the America's Cup World Series of Sailing will be hosted in Venice and it may be difficult to find any hotels.
