Going next month for first time,
so can't give you much advice,
except that I just read on a site that the Glass Museum on Murano is closed on the Tuesday,
and the Lace Museum on burano is closed on the Wednesday.
So, if you are planning a trip to see both of them,
you may want to keep that in mind.
Have FUN!

Thanks for the info. I know, I haven't really read about Museum, etc. days closed, and even times. This is such a last minute trip! We'll try to coordinate the trips to the islands, I guess, or have to go two days.

One fun thing we do is to board a vaporetto and work ourselves to the front bow seats as people get off. Then just sit there and watch Venice float by. Great way to see all the stops. Plus you can get a 3 day tourist pass that lets you get on and off as many times as you want. Eliminates having to buy tix each time. Use this to go to the islands you want to visit.

Walking the streets of Venice is most of the fun of being there. Just exploring the alleys and shops is very interesting.

Do a gondola ride. You are there so you have to as everyone will ask you that as the first question when you mention Venice. Just do it!

Drinks in St Marks Square. Expensive, but worth the views and people watching.

Toni,
we had 6 nights in Venice over Easter and just loved it. Places I would suggest you visit are Rialto Bridge and markets, the fruit & veg and fish markets are on in the mornings and the other markets, like souvenirs, clothes etc are on all day.
Just go and wander, maybe around the San Polo or Dorsoduro areas which are less touristy than near San Marco.
Visit the Basilica and St Marks square but when we were there the queues to get into the Basilica were horrendous. They would only let a few in at a time. Coffee in the piazza is great but be warned, you will pay heaps for the privilege (and extra if the pianist is playing).
A day trip to Burano then Murano would be good. Catch a vaporetto which goes to both, have lunch, look in all the glass/lace shops. We didn't think the Murano Glass Museum was very interesting.
We bought a vaporetto pass when we arrived and it was great, no need to continally buy tickets. It worked out cheaper as well as we used it so much.
Have a wonderful time, Kay

Toni, you can also buy a 24-hour pass for the vaporetti. We were in Venice for three days and found this fit our needs. Buy them at any vaporetto stop.

It's not clear when you'll be leaving Venice on Thursday. I'll assume you'll be leaving after around noon or after lunch.

Monday afternoon: a stroll through some of Castello and Cannaregio
Tuesday: a stroll through Dorsoduro and San Polo
Wednesday Morning: San Marco Basilica and Palazzo Ducale
Wednesday afternoon: a tour to the lagoon islands
Thusday morning: area between San Marco and Rialto, shopping, etc.

There's no way you'll miss piazza San Marco. Therefore, there's no rush to visit it first thing. Stroll from your hotel directly to Sta. Maria Formosa church (get a cup of nocciola icecream at the la boutique del gelato) and from there to SS. Pietro e Paulo basilica (San Zanipol&oacute where most of the diges are burried. From here you cross over to Cannaregio, aiming to get to Campo del Moro and Madonna dell'Orto church. Stroll towards the Grand Canal, throug the Jewish Ghetto. Take a vaporetto back to San Marco in the late afternoon.

In Dorsoduro there are a few museums that you may consider visiting (Peggy Guggenheim, Accademia, Scuola San Rocco and Ca' Rezzonico, among other). Except for the Accademia (approx. 2 hours) you should allow about one hour for the other. A visit to the i Frari basilica is a must and you'll need some 40 min. You may choose the Accademia + another museum. You should take a vaporetto in the early morning to start with the fish market. Then to Campo S. Giacomo dell'Orio and Campo San Polo. Next to the Frari church, San Rocco and campo Sta. Margherita. Have lunch and if you plan to visit the Accademia that's the time to do it. Next, back to San Barnaba, San Sebastiano, along Fondamenta Zattere (have a gelato at Nico) to the Gesuati church and La Salute church. You may finish your stroll with a visit to the Guggenheim museum, or do without it.

Idealyy, you should have an early breakfast in San Marco at least once. Anyway, be at San Marco square not later than 8:15am. After enjoying the square with relatively few people, enter the left side door of the basilica (not later than 8:40am) to attend the daily morning mass. After the mass, you'll have at least some 20 minutes almost by yourself before the hords of visitours pour in at 9:30am.

Hi toni
You need a good guidebook for Venice, and they almost all have suggested itineraries. Fodor's book is excellent; for more detail, buy also a Michelin Green Guide. I agree with ppp's suggestions, with the following possible
alterations: On Mon,
I'd go first from my hotel to Piazza San Marco because it's the sight of a lifetime. Have lunch or a some overpriced but delicious gelato at Florian's, sit outside,
and listen to the dueling bands playing corny music. You will never forget sitting there. From there stroll via the Rialto Bridge through Cannareggio and to the Ghetto. Or as far as your strength will take you. Take a vaporetto for the return trip down the Grand Canal.
Tues
The P. Guggenheim collection is closed on Tues, so if you want to see that, save Dorsoduro for another day.
Morning early mass at St Mark's, then Doge's Palace, (previously-reserved "Secret Itinerary" or not).
For the afternoon, catch the vapretto
for island-hopping. choose no more than two from among Burano, Murano, and Torcello. Torcello is my favorite.
Wed
Salute Church, and a walk through Dorsoduro and San Polo, making the museum or church stops that interest you. This can easily be a tiring and full day.
Thurs
whether you have a full day or half, don't have an itinerary except to wander and browse. If a "must see" remains, do one, but no other
"requirements." I'd rather you leave Venice with your last memories being wandering and being relaxed.
I have a long file on Venice; if you'd like to see it, email me.
