Venice in September
We will be going to Venice in September. Can I fly Delta from Atlanta to Venice? If not which is the closest airport? Do you have suggestions on where to stay in Venice? Never been there before and need a place that is clean and reasonably priced.

Lynda,
The closest airport to Venice to which Delta flies is in Milan. Delta has no direct flights from Atlanta to Milan; you'll go through Kennedy Airport in New York. I won't comment on hotels in Venice due to my limited experience with them. I've been in Venice in September and it's a great time to go; few tourists, fine weather.

My experience was on Alitalia non-stop LAX to Milan and on to Venice. We discovered that all Alitalia flights to other major cities go through Rome -- just like that old saying about the roads. We stayed at the Albergo Paganelli which is just 2 short blocks from Piazza San Marco, facing the lagoon. Very Venician, great location. Prices were under $100 for two, 2 years ago in March. All six people in our group were very happy with the Paganelli. I'm jealous - have a great trip!

September and part of October are still high season in Venice, specially early September with the Regata Storica and the Mostra film festival. The whole town is generally crowded and hotels are fully booked at this time. If you can go after mid-September, it may be better. Just e-mail me should you like details about hotels.

I've only flown into Venice once and as I recall it was through Zurich, Chicago to Zurich and Zurich to Venice--was it SwissAir or Alitalia??? My other suggestion would be to take the Rapido train from Milan after flying into Milan. Yes, September and October are still quite busy in Venice, but not as bad as summer. If you wait too long, however, you will run the risk of having rain and cold winds (beginning usually the last of October or first of November). We still love the Europa Hotel over the more posh ones, but the Accademia sounds very interesting----maybe next time??? Enjoy.
Good evening, Linda
Domestic flights into Venice originate from Milano,
Rome and Palermo via Naples.(all AZ)
International flights (not all, originate from Frankfurt (LH), London ( AZ BA), Paris (AF AZ) and Zurich via Lugano (LX), also( AZ} last year had a flite which left NY-Newark via Milano to Venezia.
If you fly into Venice there about three ways of getting in. # 1 is the Watertaxi directly from the airport to your hotel and will run about 100,000IL,
the other is the Motoscafi to St. Marks, runs about every 30 mins and the last the bus to the Pza Roma
Have a good trip Richard of Hickory Hills, IL.
