We're tentatively planning a winter week in Venice -- we now have a short list of 4 star hotels offering costing about or under 1000 euros for the whole week, double room:

Hotel L'Orologio
Hotel Ai Reali
Ruzzini Palace Hotel
Hotel Ai Cavalieri di Venezia
Hotel A La Commedia
Ai Mori d'Oriente
Hotel Moresco
Hotel Ca' Dogaressa
and
Al Ponte Antico

Any insights? We want a good hotel (obviously), comfortable, attractive rooms (not tiny, but we're not that fussed about size), interesting neighborhood (we don't need to be in the very heart) near some good, moderately priced cafes and restaurants, and a lobby fireplace if possible, given that this is a winter trip. It's our first trip together to Venice (DH was there as a teen-ager, me never)

Also, any thoughts on late January v late February? Not carnival week.

Well, I'm glad you asked.

For the past three years, we have stayed a week in January at the Hotel Palazzo Foscari, near the Ca d'Oro vaporetto stop. It's a great area in winter, full of local life and several cichetti bars and restaurants not far away. The hotel is comfortable with large rooms and beds, nice staff, good wifi, and a very generous breakfast buffet. Watch the rates carefully and you can get a bargain - we have always paid much less than £1000 for a week.

Thanks a lot! I just checked and for our dates, the weekly rate is 450 euros for a superior double...am I missing something? Is there a massive renovation project planned in the neighborhood or building? That sounds too good to be true...

For a winter trip I would stay out of the areas that get flooded during high tides.

For what it's worth, for an entire week, I would get a luxury apartment.

I loved the Al Ponte Antico. Beautiful property on the grande canal and close to Rialto bridge. I would also suggest that you look at their sister property, the Locando Orseolo.

I don't think you are missing something, it's just that their rate plummets during the off-season.

Keith and I stayed directly across the Fondamente Cannaregio from Dogaressa at Palazzo Cendon Mansard.

We were jealous that guests of the Dogaresssa were able to have their breakfast outside along the canal!

Of course, you wouldn't have that option.

I used the loo at A Mori Oriente and it is very posh and the location is great if you want peace and quiet.

In 2012, we stayed at Hotel San Cassiano Ca Fravetto near the Rialto Market. We liked the hotel but it was too close to the CRAZY Rialto Bridge. The crowds were insane.

Probably not much of a problem in January.

Lots of nice restaurants and cicchetti bars in the Rialto Market.
