You might want to visit a library or book store and check out a book on Venice with a map of the city. There is only one train station. It is a small city that you can walk all over (or better yet, get a vaporetto pass and take the water taxi when you tire of walking places). The major attractions can be found because signs with arrows point the way -- but even with the best of maps you'll find yourself "lost" sometimes. Don't worry. I think I've seen Albergo San Marco discussed on this site, maybe you can do a search and find it. I believe the Best Western is on Lido -- which is not really in Venice, but a boat ride away. In November you should have no problem staying in Venice itself. Try for a room with a view over a canal or the lagoon.

ooops -- misspoke there, don't take a water taxi unless you have plenty of $$$ -- the vaporetto is a water bus (there are no roads for cars, etc in Venice, just for walking). The canals are the "roads." The water taxis are very romantic looking crafts, I always expect to see Cary Grant or someone from an old movie driving one with a scarf 'round his neck blowing in the wind...

We stayed at the Albergo last Thanksgiving. It was fine, but nothing spectacular. We had 2 rooms (teenagers) a foyer and a shared bath. Both rooms were tiny, but we weren't in there much. It was very conventienly located to St Michael's square. I'm looking at the Monte Carlo myself for the spring. We took the water taxi from the parking area, it was about $50 (pre Euro remember). We walked back to the parking area, it took about 15 minutes I think.

Just a note, we always try to stay at Best Westerns, they are clean, reasonably priced and we earn points with their card for free rooms. They also vary greatly by location, no cookie cutter hotels here!

I've stayed at the Hotel Giorgione twice in the past two years. It's very authentic and the service is great. It used to be a palace. There is a free Breakfast every morning, a computer hooked up to the internet, and a pool table. I've stayed in a suite with an extra bed on a loft, if you have three people in your party. It's very close to everything, especially if you want to shop and to the vaparetto stop, Ca D'Oro. Check it out. Very reasonable for what you get.

We stayed in the Monte Carlo 2 years ago and we are staying there again this summer! Nice hotel, big rooms and american like bathrooms, with real tubs and showers. Right off piazza St Marco. Good breakfast, no view to speak of. But with flooding as scubatv said, this might not be good for you. Great accomodations though.
Have fun.
