Venice - feeling lost... and hungry... :)

Hello all. I usually post in the France forum. But now I am in Venice and feeling LOST. Although everyone says it's so great to get lost in Venice, I really don't like that feeling. Especially when I'm trying to find a place to pick up some groceries.

I wonder if you can help me with something.

Is there ANYWHERE in the San Marco area where I can get some groceries without going to the Rialto market.? I'm staying in an area right next to Teatro La Fenice. What I would do for some oranges, or some yoghurt, just a few little things.

If you have any idea how to find something nearby and easy to get to, I'd LOVE to hear about it. So far I feel I have walked in every direction and found no little markets.

And any restaurant recommendations are super welcome also. So far the ones around here look SUPER touristy. And the one I went to was AWFUL.

I'd REALLY search this on the web but I'm finding my internet connection here to be IFFY at best. - NOt good for long surf sessions. But I can check in and see what information you may offer.

Thank you so much in advance.
Yours
MC2

Let me give you a link to Chowhound for a very recent long thread of restaurant recommendations. Rather than try and read it on line, copy the thread and paste it into a document on your computer, and read it off-line.

Good luck!

It is hard to descibe here, but there is a decent mercato within :10 of your location we have used many times. It would be in the direction of Santa Maria Formosa--ask a local for specifics.

Jeez, I know how you feel. It was very hard for us to find a little market to get batteries, yoghurt, snacks in Venice. Good luck!

Zeppole, Thanks for the tip on copying to a document to read later. I am afraid that now I will look like a real dunce to admit that I did not realize I could do that with my comuter.
Mostly I shop, read emails and search the web for info....this will change my life...thanks!!!!

Here's a map that shows the supermarkets in Venice (not all grocery stores, of course, just supermarkets). Just click on the "milk gallon" icons and ignore the rest.

Here is a seller of fruit and veg in sestiere San Marco, close to where you are.. Such vendors usually also sell dairy. It is called Ortofrutta Codolo and the address is 3730 San Marco. The telephone is 0415220911, so your hotel can call and find out if they are open as well as mark it on a map for you. Here is a link to a map if your computer connection can handle it.

You also can often find dairy products in pastry and bread stores if you've seen any in your neighborhood.

Your hotel desk should be able to direct you to a small food store if one exists in San Marco. They are called "alimentari". If you are not staying in a hotel, go to a hotel and ask at their desk.

Grocery stores on the other side of San Marco

Head for Rialto for nice food ambience overlooking

gondolas many nice restaurant pizza from 7 euro or so

Family style basic dishes served cafeteria style

without expensive tip or cover try Al Vaporretto

Eurocheapo has many great Osterias around the are great!

Have fun,

I think Google maps has them for a bunch of cities. Just google, e.g., google map Paris supermarkets.
