Venice is expensive. A bunk in Venice is about 20Euro. If you look hard and can spend a little more, you can find something. Check out letsgo.com and look under Italy accomodations. Also visit the forums at eurotrip.com and chatarea.com/backpackers to find suggestions.

Hi Lesa,
You might want to look for accomodation in Mestre or even Padua (about 1/2 hr by train) to find rates this low.

Check out the religous housing(convents and monasteries). There are several sources, books and lots of info on the web. Only potential hang up seems to be if you are are an unmarried male/female couple.

Lesa,
Check the message board on Lonely Planet --- http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com
You'll find a more hostel crowd on their website. I don't know any specifics about the hostel in Venice (on Guidecca). In addition to the hostel, the convent may also be in your price range.
Here's two websites that will help you identify possible accommadations in that price range -

http://www.bookmeahostel.com/

http://www.hostelworld.com

I was surprised to see several hostels listed for Venice (and in good locations) on the 'bookmeahostel' site.
