Veggie lover in a Sausage town

I need help!! I'm a vegitarian(not vegan)and am going to Germany to visit my friend at a nearby army base. I'd like to know if it's going to be hard for me to find non-meat dishes. I'm aware that beer is a very good alternative food source, but let's face it I can't drink all the time!! If anyone could supply me with the names of any dishes just in case I have an all German menu I'd really appreciate it. Please help me Fodorites!!! Thank you Diane

It rather depends on where in Germany you're going - there are veggie restaurants in the big cities. There are also lots of Italian restaurants (as well as other ethnic places) which will have vegetarian dishes. I'm sure it'll be fine - I'm a vegetarian and I've been to Germany 5 times and never had a problem finding food

If you are going to Germany, and especially if you have special food preferences, you should buy a travelers' foreign phrase book, one with a good restaurant section. Or even spring for a full English-German dictionary, a paperback is only a few dollars. BTW, the word is spelled vegetarian. People in Germany do eat vegetables, salad, bread, potatoes, etc., although main courses have a lot of meat, as do some appetizers.

Hello! I'm a vegetarian living in Munich. If you're coming here, I can give you the names of good places to eat. Otherwise, go for Italian, Greek, Chinese, whatever. Do you eat fish? If so, lachs=salmon, fisch=fish, forelle=trout. Kasespatzle is sorta like macaroni and cheese and is usually served with roasted onions on top. In most German restaurants, there really is not much to pick from unless you want a salad (salat). Here's what to AVOID: fleisch, wurst, schwein, leberkase, schinken. Good luck!

If we are not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?

THank you all for your help. I was planning on getting a phrase book with a menu guide but the hints you gave me will be most helpful. I'm looking forward to my visit and trying new foods. thank you again!!!
