Vatican - Size of purse

We will be visiting the Vatican and I understand they ask you to check in large purses and backpacks. Based on people's experiences, would a 12" x 11" x 3.25" purse be considered large? We are booked with Context Rome and they said that the size of my purse seems okay but it really depends on the person on the door. I was just wondering if anyone had a similar-sized purse and what their experience has been. Thank you.

I had a medium sized, over the shoulder bag and DH had a small backpack. We had to go through metal detectors, as did everyone else before getting in. We were allowed to carry our bags in.

Are you asking about St Peter's or the Vatican Museums?
For St. Peter's several months ago, I entered (after screening, of course) with a large nylon tote. I did not go to the Museums on this trip.

This was for the museum and St. Peter's.

I had a medium sized backpack and was not asked to check it at either St. Peter's or the Vatican Museum. It seemed that everyone could carry anything in, as long as they went thru the metal detectors.

I had a bag of pretty similar size, and didn't have to check it or anything; I don't really remember many people being told to check bags, but I wasn't really paying attention.

Thank you for everyone's responses. kayd, I was referring to the Vatican Museum; sorry for the ambiguity. I believe Context Rome was trying to take extra pre-caution. It looks like I should be okay. Thanks again.
