Vacationing in Switzerland
My Husband and I will be vacationing in Switzerland this September for 11 days. We are flying from New York JFK into Zurich and departing from Geneva on the return.

Any suggestions as to what city's we should visit ? And how is the driving/parking ? We are unsure if we should rent a car or travel via rail.
Good morning, Tiziana
With the exsisting rail system in CH. andthe use of a Swiss Pass, it is hard
to beat for economy. We have used rail
for many years, also have used their
baggage system in sending luggage ahead
to be held till the end of the trip, especially if you are going from the
mountains to e.g. Italy and warmer climate. Cities or places in order
would be:
Zurich
Luzern
Berneroberland
Montreaux & Lake Geneva
Zermatt Glacier Express to
St. Moritz
Geneva
Save some of CH for a return trip the
Berneroberland can easily take three to
four days in one place.
Drop me an e-mail for a list of URL;s
for the places I have mentioned.
Richard of Hickory Hills, Il....
How easily do you get bored? If you are content to spend lots of time in each of a few cities or major towns, train is fine. But if you get bored by this, and want to see more places, stop in the countryside, etc., a car is very useful. I certainly would get bored by 11 days in Switzerland, and would be off into Germany or France for a couple of days, and a car makes this really easy to do.
BAK

The large cities in Switzerland were boring. They are large business type cities, except for Berne and Luzern. We drove through Geneva and stayed in Zurich,MOST ugly. Berne was very nice as was Luzerne, but the real treasures are in the country. We stayed in Grindelwald and took the train toi Kleine Shidel. Then another train up the Jungfrau. Beautiful. In Grindalwald we stayed in a chalet type hotel and faced the 3 mountains. With a balcony and kitchen in the room we ate supper there twice. The views were so magnificant especially as the sun rises in the morning. I don't remember the name of the hotel but it was quite ezpensive as is everything is Switzerland. It was off the main street in a quiet location in the center of town. If you get a chance go to France, stay in Chaminex. Nice city, in the Savior region. They have a fantastic cable car arrangement that takes you up to the top of Mt. Blanc. You can even take a cable car to Italy from there. It was the most dramatic I have ever seen. Another advantage of driving is going over the alp passes such as the Furka pass, it is a sight you will remember. The pases are great and in Sept they will still be open as it probably wont be snowed in yet. Always snow on the mountains. a car is the way to go. Enjoy alan
