Uzes on a Sunday?

I am in the process of cutting up and reconfiguring my itinerary (which is like rearranging puzzle pieces) as DH is compelling me to trim time. One new possibility involves moving the Pont du Gard and Uzes to a Sunday. Per resident expert, Stu, there are several towns that should be avoided on that particular day of the week. Since Uzes appears to be one of the smaller towns/villages, I'm not sure that applies, but I still have limited knowledge about its particular attractions. Is this one of those shuttered-up-until Monday-afternoon places?

nothing much happening on a Sunday unless it's a fete week in August. The Saturday market is impressive and should not be missed. There are wonderful shops and restaurants there.

The Duchy is open every day for tours except 25 December.

There will be a good selection of restaurants open on a summer Sunday.

As Uzes is a working town, as well as being interesting to tourists, Sunday should be a pleasant day to visit.

The Saturday market in summer is very busy and causes parking problems. Consider Sommieres market as a Saturday alternative.

Some of my wife's favorite shops are in Uzes. I suspect they will be closed on Sunday. We'll be in Provence this June for 2 weeks. If we make it over to Uzes, I'll find out if they are open on Sundays and Mondays.

Okay, so it seems that cigale thinks "no" and mpprh thinks "yes" and Stu thinks "probably not," but will check. Thank you all! It appears that my only other option that day might be Arles, Les Beaux & Glanum. Well, we know for sure that Arles is definitely not its best on Sunday, right? Maybe if I forego any shopping in Uzes, it could still be slightly pleasant if restaurants are still open . I'm not sure market day would be the best day to see the town for the first time, though I hear it's a good one. The thing is that Uzes is the only logical combination with Pont du Gard.

P.S.: It is breaking my heart, but I think I'm going to have to cut Burgundy out of this particular trip. DH is insistent that he can't leave the business for a month and says we need to cut the plan down to 3 to 3 1/2 weeks. I figured if I must cut off something after Paris, it shouldn't be Provence or the Dordogne! I guess we'll take the TGV directly to Avignon then, under Plan B, rather than to Auxerre.

Would Tarascon be a decent/reasonable place to tack onto Uzes & Pont du Gard while I'm in the neighborhood? (I've tentatively moved Orange to another day.) I wouldn't be interested in the fabric factory, but my son might like the castle.

I note that the Fêtes de la Tarasque and Tarascon is the last Sunday in June. It would be cool to see that, but it would mean bumping our entire trip a week, which would put us into Dordogne the first week of July -- probably not a good idea, hmm?

Tarascon appears to be a little off the radar, so it's a bit of an unknown, though a few Fodorites seem to have put in a good word for it. Just wondering what the reason for that might be. . . and whether that should be avoided on a Sunday, as well.

One other thing: Tying together Provence & Dordogne presents an interesting dilemma. Relative to timing, it appears on the surface that it would be better to see Dordogne before Provence (3rd & 4th week of June, respectively) to avoid the worst of the summer crowds in Dordogne and catch the lavender in Provence. Looking at the geographical logistics, though, it really only makes sense to travel from Paris to Provence first before swinging up to Dordogne, which is of course what I have planned on doing all along. Any thoughts?

Actually, Peter says it is a working town; that generally means that butchers and other small food shops are open on Sunday morning, but the town pretty much closes down in the afternoon (except for the afternoon bread). We've used Uzès as a base several times, and I recall that there have been non-food markets in place aux Herbes on Sunday mornings—hand-made clothing and so forth—and I believe there are second-hand stalls along the boulevard that circles the old town on Sunday as well (according to the town website there are brocantes on Sunday from 7 am to 6 pm). So, the nice shops will be closed, but it's a lovely town for strolling through and there are worse ways to spend a few hours than sipping a drink under the plane trees in place aux Herbes.

Uzes is a very interesting town - but the market really obscures the architcture and makes it less enjoyable, IMO. The market is very colorful, however. We took too many pictures.

Peter did not say that shops would be open, storefront windows lit up (& not covered with shutters), and some "life" in the town. He said it would be "enjoyable". I always encourage tourists to visit towns when they are at their best - usually not market day nor Sundays or Mondays. The only restaurant listed in the current Michelin Red Guide is closed on Sunday & Monday. However, there are many outdoor cafes, & cafes under the arches at the Pl Herbes - and I suspect several will be open on Sunday. We stayed there for 2 weeks a couple of years ago and drove into town to buy stuff at a small grocery that was open on Sunday. Not much else was open - but we really didn't walk through all of the town. Remember - it is French law that shops must close on Sunday. There are exceptions for food oriented shops (morning only), restaurants, and cultural sites (museums). Also, one of the exceptions seems to be towns where a huge part of their commerce/business is devoted to tourism - like St Remy & Gordes.

St Remy, les Baux, Gordes, & Roussillon would be good cities/villages to visit on Sunday. Of course, l'Isle sur la Sorgue will be VERY active on Sunday because that day is their huge farmers, antique, & craft market. You could do St Remy, les Baux, Glanum, and a scenic drive around the Alpilles on Sunday. Or the market in l'Isle sur la Sorgue, Gordes & Roussillon.

Thanks for your very helpful input, Margriet. I'm not totally into shopping & my DH and DS certainly are not, though a good shop front will certainly catch my eye! I like the idea of strolling through a town and sipping a drink under the plane trees. At the same time, I would hope to avoid too much of the graffiti-covered metal security shutters. As you can tell, I'm trying to visualize each town ahead of time since I'm kind of an oddly detail-oriented person. (Google street view in Paris was perfect for this, but alas it doesn't cover the bases in the countryside.)

I know my questions and schedule-shuffling must be driving everyone nuts. Believe me, I am muttering under my breath each time DH sends me back to the drawing board. Thanks all for your patience!

We were in Provence the first 2 weeks in July (plus last 2 in June) in '99 and it was not "uncomfortably" crowded. We were in the Dordogne the last 2 weeks in June last year, and it was not crowded. I think the worst time is the last 2 weeks of July & the first 3 in August when the majority of French people take their vacation.

Based on what I've seen, Provence is more crowded than the Dordogne - but we tend to try hard to avoid crowds by visiting the "most popular" sites in the early morning or late afternon.

There are frequent trains between Paris (& CDG) and Avignon, and also from Brive la Gaillard (close to the Dordogne) and Paris. If you were visiting Paris last, then starting your itinerary by taking the TGV from CGD to Avignon would be the most efficient. If you start your trip in Paris - then I don't think it makes a big difference whether your next destination is Provence or the Dordogne - but like you mentioned, the lavender will be best during the last portion of your alloted time schedule.

We have taken the TGV from Dijon, Chambery, and Beaune directly to CDG to connect with our flight home. If you are comfortable with that (IMO, the TGV is more reliable than an air connection) then you could take the TGV from Avignon to Dijon and add a full day/1 night stay in Dijon to the end of your vacation.

Thanks, Stu. Your post came in while I was typing the reply to Margriet.

<<Also, one of the exceptions seems to be towns where a huge part of their commerce/business is devoted to tourism - like St Remy & Gordes.>>

Yes, thank you. That is exactly what I'm having a hard time figuring out - which town is which in terms of "working" or "tourist" or some combo thereof.

<<Or the market in l'Isle sur la Sorgue, Gordes & Roussillon.>>

I've decided to base two days closer to the Luberon towns during the middle of the trip, which falls earlier in the week (a B&B close to Gordes), rather than making the 1 hr haul each way from St-Remy. My new Provence plan has me arriving in Avignon, going straight up to Vaison for 2 nights, moving to the Luberon for 2 nights and then finishing in St. Remy for 2-3 nights before moving onto the Dordogne. It seems like a logical progression. There is clearly a trade-off between the cost & convenience of one base versus significantly less driving. I thus think I'll be able to catch the l'Isle market the previous Thurs.

<<You could do St Remy, les Baux, Glanum, and a scenic drive around the Alpilles on Sunday.>>

This is a very good option, yes, similar to one of my days under Plan A. Back to the drawing board. . .

>>I thus think I'll be able to catch the l'Isle market the previous Thurs.<<

The huge market with all the antiques is on Sunday - not Thursday. I don't know how good the Thurs market is.....

>>which town is which in terms of "working" or "tourist" or some combo thereof.<<

It's hard to figure out. Gordes & Roussillon are quite active on Sundays & shops are open. However, things are not open in Bonnieux on Sunday - which I think is similar to Roussillon (maybe a little less tourist oriented). We assume that shops will not be open & the town pretty dead unless we know otherwise. Fountaine de Vaucluse has some activity also - but it seemed like everyone with a baby stroller was there just wandering around when we visited on a Sunday.

I actually prefer Sarlat on a Sunday when there are fewer tourists & only a few shops open. Easier to admire the beautiful architecture.

<<. . .you could take the TGV from Avignon to Dijon and add a full day/1 night stay in Dijon to the end of your vacation.>>

Or, alternatively, the TGV from Paris to Dijon for a day and then TGV to Avignon. You know, I had really been considering that, particularly because I did not want to miss Dijon. My first hesitation was in wondering whether the cost of dividing the TGV trips in two like that would cost more than a single trip straight to Avignon (though I hadn't actually checked the site to confirm). DH then pointed out that we would be adding one of the five days he had just asked me to subtract. It's still not out of the realm of possibility, though, while I continue juggling.

You know, the idea of finishing in Paris is intriguing, but feels strange to me. I'm worried I'd be too tired at the end of the trip to handle the high energy & walking. I'll lay that card on the table, though.

Thank gawd I've started planning so early. I hope I'm still sane by the time we go. I may go out of character and pull a kerouac by throwing the cards to the wind once I land. (Of course, then I'd gather them all up in a panic & sort them out again.)

It depends what you are interested in. Sundays don't bother me anywhere, but I don't care about shopping very much at all. There isn't much of anything you can't do on a Sunday, otherwise, and you won't starve to death, there will be places open to eat. Now if you want some top restaurant, you should look into that. I've been in Uzes on a Sunday and don't remember anything terrible about it. I like Sundays as they are slower days, actually, and you don't have all the traffic and stuff of other days, often. The Duche is open on Sundays, that's interesting to see.

It really depends why you are going there and what you expect. Sundays are slow days in any city or town in France, although I might avoid a place that had 1000 or less population (although there wouldn't be a lot to do in such places any day). Uzes isn't that tiny, there are lots of restaurants there of all kinds, from very casual to more expensive. There will be less choice on Sunday, sure, but there are plenty of places to eat.

(Giggling) We seem to be typing posts at the same time and crossing paths.

<<The huge market with all the antiques is on Sunday - not Thursday. I don't know how good the Thurs market is.....>>

Ugh. I keep missing these details. So much of this is still over my head even though I know that tiny fact must be somewhere in my voluminous notes.

Re: your notes on the various characteristics of each town, you have no idea how much those little comments help me during my planning. I really appreciate the way you and other Fodorites relate to (or at least tolerate) my obsession with minutae. (Sorry kerouac, et al.) The way I see it, the more I plan now, the more I can relax & enjoy later.

IMO, the worst place to be if you hit hot weather is Paris. It really drains our energy.

I would start the trip in Paris so you can recover from jet-lag easier, since I think it would be easier to re-arrange your sightseeing itinerary at the last minute if 1 or more of you "crashes". Harder to change itineraries or get a little nap if a car is involved. This will also allow you to catch the Lavender season at its peak.

However, you may be able to gain 1/2 of a sightseeing-day if you do Paris last, and can get to CDG from Paris. Otherwise, you'll need a 1 night stay in Paris, CDG (ugh), or Dijon (or any place with an easy connection to CDG) before your flight home.

Christine, you make very valid points and your comments about your own experience are useful. It's true that I'm not a big shopper and one has to consider how the interests of other Fodorites affect their individual impressions of a place.

Also, I had the impression for some reason that Uzes was small. I don't know where I got that idea & I appreciate everyone setting me straight.

(I remember my youngest son at about the age of four saying, "Rollercoasters make my head feel old." I'm kinda feeling that way now.)

Since Peter lives in Languedoc, He knows the place well. I had a brief lunch in Sommieres, a pleasant stop. The weather had turned chilly and my husband forgot his sweater so we bought a beautiful Italian cardigan there.
In Uzes, Le Bistro du Grezac should be open. It's located
on the Place Belle Croix. If the La Maison de la Truffe is open on the Place aux Herbes, they are very helpful giving out directions and information.

Maybe my views are different.

I take visitors to Uzes and they love the whole walking/shopping/eating/Royal Duchy/Museum 1900/Chateau d'Arpillargues/Remoulins/Pont Du Gard/Haribo factory/Wednesday farmers market/Avignon experience.

I tend to focus on checking if the Uzes Carrefour has crumpets, Californian Zinfandel or mature cheddar in stock !

My tips for a nice Sunday market is Calvisson. A former bustling market town that has been bypassed by the main road and the railway has closed. It is small enough to have most things, but not big enough to be too tiring. The bar by the Restaurant Palmier is reckoned to be the best !

Lunel Sunday market (by the bull ring) is much bigger and has a plant section. Les Halles are open on Sunday mornings.
