Use of Foreign currencies in Istanbul

Do the merchants in Istanbul accept foreign currencies other than US$ as payment for purchases made? I read that they accept German marks and even Dutch guilders.

Is this true? Are other FX currencies accepted all over Turkey?

We will be travelling all over the SW part of Turkey this June. Thanks in advance.

In Istanbul we paid for stuff at the Covered Bazaar with marks. We didn't have enough Turkish cash so we asked if they'd take DM and it was fine. I think a lot of places told us prices in dollars without us asking. Also paid a taxi driver with DM when he didn't have change for the Turkish bill we had.

Just read today that the citizens of Turkey are standing in line at the banks redeeming their money. Apparently, the economy if worsening rapidly. Ideas on what precautions travelers should take in light of these circumstances? The obvious is to change as little currency as possible and use credit cards. Anything else?
This should offer travelers to Turkey some very good exchanges, no?
To: Watch Out
My travel agent just advised me to use the debt card instead. Then one can get as much or as less as one wants. I intend to take her advice.
