BTW, it is correct that if you are entitled to be a member of USAA, which again you do not have to be to apply for a USAA credit card, all your children (and I believe even grandchildren) are entitled to become members of USAA. You must provide your children's info to USAA however, to verify they are your children.

I would strongly suggest that anyone who qualifies should check out their insurance program. Auto, HO, fire, Renters HO etc. You could not ask, IMHO for a better insurance company. And I owned an independent insurance agency for years so I feel qualified that I know about service oriented insurance companies. USAA is tops in my book.

USAA insurance was tops in my book until last January, when my car was totaled and they announced that my car-rental rider would cover only 3 days of rental.

Just to vouch for USAA in response to the anonymous post, which seems a bit strange anyway:

I have been with USAA for awhile. I am one in a long line in my family. They have been nothing but helpful 99% of the time. Sure I have had problems here and there, but when it came down to it, they took care of me.

Any insurance company is going to have bad reports or bad responses to people at points. But USAA, in general, is the most customer service friendly, and the most customer concerned company I have ever done business with.

Anonymous, need more information to make a judgment. Was the accident your fault? Did your policy state the car rental rider was only good for 3 days?

Insurance coverage varies from policy to policy. I had a flood when the icemaker line broke free from the refrig while I was at work -- over 8 hours of running water. I had no idea at the time what was covered. I later, to my relief, found out that everything was covered with the exception of the $250 deductable.

No, the accident was definitely not my fault; I already got a check for the full book value, not minus my deductible.

I haven't checked the policy, but the point is that they paid for 3 full weeks a few years ago when a different idiot ran into me, but for a *total*, where you need to shop for a new car, you get less time! I'm taking it up with the other insurance co, of course.

Anonymous,

Right in the policy it states that rental coverage extends to 3 days after the reimbursement offer is tendered. Why do you think you are entitled to more than you bought? Are you upset with the grocer when there are only 12 eggs in the dozen you bought?

In all seriousness, when the other driver is at fault, you should make your claim on the other driver's insurance company. Your own insurance is usually limited in many respects (depreciated value, etc.) while the other driver, and his insurance company, can assert no contractual defense or limit against you.

I would surmise you made your claim through USAA because of their excellent service, but in this situation I think you weakened your case. Note that when you signed the offer from your own insurance company and took their money, you no doubt assigned your claim against the other driver to your own insurance company.
