upgradable fares-does anyone share my frustration?

i am constantly going nuts when i try to find some good fares to europe and when i go to book them they are always a non-upgadable fare. does anyone know of a web site that will let you search for the lowest upgradable fare say on delta? also does anyone know of any sites that show promotions for other classes such as business class rather than just economy fares? i can't believe i'm the only one who is looking for this? thanks in advance fo your help.

Michael,

On the Delta website you can search for unrestricted coach fares. On their home page you enter the dates, location, etc. and a drop down menu allows you to specify ticket type. Just pick coach unrestricted. However, good fares (meaning, cheap) are almost always restricted. Unrestricted coach fares sometimes cost almost as much as first or business class.

You might check the webflyer site's bulletin board for information on other promotions for business travel, upgrades, etc. The people on that board seem to be experts on that sort of thing.

Hope this helps.

If you ever find it, I'd sure love to know. You're right - - it's enough to drive you crazy.

I do think that there is some kind of Worldspan web site that lets you see all kinds of fare class info - - but it is not very user friendly - - and not a site for "consumers" (like you and me) to book on. I think they once had some trial membership services, but looking at their web site right now tells me nothing. Maybe a VERY web-savvy travel agents can tell more about using it. My travel agent in on their service - - but she is NOT Web savvy.

Sharing your pain...

Rex

Same gripe here, Michael, though I guess it's understandable from a business perspective. Continental does have a pretty liberal policy - top tier Platinum Elite OnePass members can upgrade just about any published fare. If you're a FF member, try calling the FF service line and ask about lowest upgradeable - I started doing this and found I save lots of time.

Upgradable fares are NOT always synonymous with non-restricted fares. In factm the few times I have purchased them - - they were QUITE restricted - - maybe even non-refundable. But they were NOT the LOWEST restricted fares.
michael,
I've discovered that, at least for Delta, you cannot do anything w/upgradable fares on the website. Some time ago, their website was offering 10,000 bonus miles for booking a Europe trip on the web, so I tried for hours to book or find an upgradable fare -- all I could find were lowest-fare or full coach (unrestricted). I finally called the Delta rep, who (eventually) informed me that the web site is not set up to do upgradable fares yet. They did let me purchase the low fare online, get the bonus, and then pay the extra later at the airport for an upgraded seat.

The best you can do online is continue to search each airline's site for promotions.

Good luck.
s

There's no point in searching for cheap upgradeable fares as the airlines don't typically run specials on these. As far as status, most airlines I know allow upgrades on any published fare only for domestic. Sucks, but can't blame the airline for not wanting to give away a $7,000 business class seat for a $400 discount fare and 50,000 miles. We figure it's worth the price for the comfort.

I'm Platinum on CO, and no, they do not allow their elites to upgrade on any fare. I've found the easiest way to check is to call their elite desk and give them the parameters of when I want to travel on the "cheapest upgradeable fare" and let them tell me what is available. I recently came back from London on a $404 fully upgradeable fare, but I also was charged over$1000 for the lowest upgradeable fare to Rome.
