The only dialect, if you can call it that, which I remember from Heidelberg is that people typically said "Zwo" instead of "zwei.">>
Peg - IME "zwo" is quite common all over Germany, but I've never worked out any rationale for when to use it and when not.
I too have been flummoxed by various german dialects, but we had some german guests in our barn last year who were astonished that I could understand them when they were speaking to each other in Pfaelzisch - what they did not know was that I'd spent many weeks in the Pfalz with my pen friend and her family so it's the one dialect I can understand.

Re the Harz Mtns. for a visit, easy trip from Berlin. The trip to the Brocken is wonderful. Recommend you stay in Wernigerode but have stayed in both Bad Harzburg and Braunlage. Enjoyed both my visits there in summer and in winter.
Have also visited the Ore Mountains. Really enjoyed that. Stayed in Hartenstein at Romantik Hotel Jagdhaus, old hotel built for the ore mine workers but transformed and updated into a very nice hotel with very good restaurant. Lots of German spoken here. Could also spend time in Dresden and Chemnitz, finishing up in Berlin, one of my favorite cities.

I agree with Huggy that if you want to go up the Brocken, Wernigerode is the place to stay - from the town it's an easy walk to and from the station and the train journey takes about 1 ½ - 2 hours; if you stay elsewhere, you either have to drive there or take a much longer train journey, which eats into the time you can spend on the mountain.

You can't much wrong with the Harz mountains.
When you still have time, you can go a bit W / SW to the Weser mountains (actually more hills than mountains).
And follow the river from Hann. Münden or Karlshafen downstream to Hameln.
From which airport will you depart eventually?
And is it important that your last destinations will be somewhat conveniently located with that in mind?
For example, if you booked flights in and out of Berlin, it would be somewhat of a PITA to trek back to Berlin from some quaint village on the Mosel river.
By the way, the main reason to say "zwo" instead of "zwei" is that "zwei" can sound pretty much like "drei". For example, when you give someone your phone number in a noisy pub, you can say "zwo" to make sure he won't confuse 2 for 3.
But some people just make a habit out of it.
