Budgeting for upcoming trip.
Could someone tell me what an average current price is for gas (petrol) in the U.K.?

fill your cases with the stuff when you come over - you will save a fortune.

At the moment £1.10 for a (french) litre of unleaded. Seems to rise by the day.

if you are coming from the States - remember that the increase in fuel costs may well be offset by the increase in fuel efficiency of many European cars compared the those in the US.

We drive around 5000 miles when on holiday in the States - rave about the cheap fuel then realise that our Dodge Durango is doing around 10 mpg.

If you are concerned ask for a medium engined diesel from the hire company - many do 60 mpg. Also don't forget that this is not a big country so a tank will last you from one end to the other.

fill it with fuel - if your found with cash the border guards will assume that you are on a Colombian type shopping trip.

Fill with with fuel -they will know immediately your simply a US tourist with a tumbling exchange rate.

Actually I am Canadian - so it makes more sense for me to stop at the Tar Sands and ask for some freshly squeezed oil and then make up some gas. However the flight to Alberta might be a little too expensive.

a diesel probably won't give you payback as the fuel will cost more and most likely the car will cost significantly more to hire. you MIGHT get a payback on it (depending on the premium you need to pay to hire it) if you drive thousands of miles on the motorway and if you are hiring a very large car.

and it will stink for days if you get a half a drop of it on your finger. probably not worth it.

different story in some other european countries as diesel is cheaper than petrol in some places and diesels are much more common as hire cars (i.e. little or no premium paid to hire them).
