Turkeys in London?
hi all,<BR><BR>Traveling to London this week for Thanksgiving. Does anyone know where in London one can buy a fresh or frozen turkey? I heard that it's very difficult to find stores that sell turkeys in England. Thanks in advance.....

You may have a problem finding a whole turkey this far ahead of Christmas. That's the traditional time for eating them in England so most breeders don't have them ready for sale until December. But people eat turkey meat all year round nowadays, so go into any supermarket and you'll find lots of turkey joints, steaks, kievs, etc. <BR><BR>If you're determined to have a whole turkey and can't find a frozen one in a supermarket, I think your best bet is to order one from a traditional family butcher. I'm sure somebody here will be able to recommend one, but it may take a few days and as I don't know when Thanksgiving is, you may already be too late.

If you are in London by tuesday you MIGHT be able to order a fresh one from a good butcher shop and get it in time for Thursday. But - before you get too excited - I assume you are in a flat with a kitchen. Check out the size of your oven. Some holiday apartments have very small cookers (stoves) and a 15 lb turkey likely won't fit.<BR><BR>Turkeys aren't hard to find in December but Thanksgiving isn't celebrated in the UK so they aren't often stocked in Nov.<BR><BR>I never had touble finding turkeys for Christmas.

If you do find one, get an organic (or at the least, a free-range one.) They will taste so much better than the factory-farmed versions, and won't have ingested anything nasty like antibioticis or pesiticides etc. etc. It will cost more, but it will taste better.

I agree with Janice. Your oven will probably be quite small. However, the biggest problem is the refrigerator. We have rented apartments in London 3 times and have never had what americans would call a full size fridge. More like the small ones used in wet bars and dorm rooms. No place to put a turkey and any of the trimmings. Barely enough room for a few quarts of milk, eggs and some meat and cheese and a few other basics. I'd forget about trying to cook Thanksgiving dinner, you probably won't have a large roasting pan anyway. Go out to a good old fashioned carvery-type restaurant. reservations will not be a problem because it is not a holiday there.
