Turkey and Greece -- is the timing wrong?
Unlike most of you, we will only get one trip to Europe (unless our state gets a lottery and we win, so there are the odds). It has always been my dream to explore the ancient Mediterranean world.

Obviously, Italy has lots to offer on this score, but I have always wanted to see the Aegean world of western Turkey and Greece and the islands.

I notice, however, that lately there has been very little activity on this forum concerning that area, particularly Turkey. A friend tells me that Americans have never been more unpopular in that area and that I should confine my itinerary to Italy. Is he right? How/Why/What would you suggest?

in 1997 and 1998 i backpacked around europe. after spain, my favorite area was greece and turkey. i took the ferries eastward through the greek isles, choosing my stops based on my guidebook and the ferry schedules. i arrived in greece in mid-august and ended up in bodrum, turkey by october 1. i stayed in turkey until early november, touring north up the coast first- as far as ephesus and then going back down south and southeast to antalya and then up through cappodocia and into istanbul. the people in greece and turkey were wonderful and the timing was perfect. i try to avoid high tourist season- i think september and october are the best times to travel the mediterranean. both countries are extremely cheap. go go go- you will not regret it.

haven't been to Turkey, but noticed absolutely no indication of "Anti-americanism" in Greece. Sure, the Greek government's offical "socialist-leftist" positions tend to be a lot a huff and rhetoric, and blaming the USA for everything from potholes to the price of bread tends to deflect scrutiny away from the government's poor record. But I saw no evidence of that attitude among the citizenry. Be well mannered, and you will have no problems or concerns in Greece.

With the 2004 Olymics coming the Greece are going out of their way to show how well they can host visitors. This includes cleaning up a lot of their infrastructure problems. This is a great time to take advantage of it. Be sure to see some of mainland Greece as well as the Islands. Athens has lots of treasures and Delphi and Meteora are must sees.
