Trying to locate a WWII hotel in Nice

Hi, Fodorites,
My father, who is now 85, was in France during WWII, after having survived DDay. He had a memorable R&R in Nice, and he has a postcard of the Hotel Continental in Nice. We can't find the hotel and wonder if anyone can help us.

The postcard shows that the hotel was a large rectangular flat roof building, kind of classical architecture. It was not on the water. The postcard he has of it shows it on a garden/plaza with a small building of similar architecture off on the side.

Can anyone help us figure out what the current name of this building might be? I can't imagine that they have knocked down the building, it looks like too grand of a hotel for that, but that was in 1944.

Thanks for your help, Laurie

Yes, that's it! Do you know if it is still standing? Laurie

Alas, I don't know. I thought perhaps someone who is a regular visitor to Nice might recognize the building. You might also post that picture in the France message board of the Slow Travel website. You might even try e-mailing it to the Nice Tourist board and asking (although they're probably pretty busy this month) or some other organization in Nice, like the hotels association (or even a realtor).

Good luck!

Thanks so much, zeppole,
I will follow up on some of your suggestions. I will also hope that someone who knows Nice well will click on the link you provided and recognize the building.

Laurie

Post your inquiry and postcard link at Tripadvisor's Nice board, too. Often there are locals that participate on the TA boards.

Don't know if anyone's interested, but just thought I'd finish this thread. The slowtrav folks were great. Someone found a photo from a French filmoteca site that listed the address of the hotel at Place Guynemer, then someone else found pictures of the Place and concluded that it is now an apartment building, called "le bliss". http://www.pbase.com/bmcmorrow/image/84323180

I'm hoping to take my dad on a trip to some of the places he spent time during the war, and I think it'd be nice to have a few destinations where the memories weren't all so sad. So we'll try to make it to Le Bliss in Nice! Thank you so much everyone. LR
