Trondheim to Bodo questions

Hello,
We will be in Norway in July and we have a few days to plan at the end of our trip before we fly out of Trondheim. My partner really wants to see more of the north so we are considering these 2 options:
1) rent a car in Trondheim and drive as far north on Kystriksveien as possible before we run out of time and return to Trondheim via the E6.
2) fly to Bodo and rent a car and tool around there for a couple days before flying back or taking the night train to Trondheim.

I guess I’m seeking more information about the Kystriksveien/coastal road to help me decide. Is the southern part “worth it”, given that we can’t drive the entire route? We’d probably exit it at the Levang-Nesna ferry to go to Mo I Rana and Polarsirkelen.

I’ll add that we don’t mind driving, we like the journey in addition to the destination, and are aware that routes take longer than they seem.

thanks for your help!
