Trolls. Was: Elvira et all
GentleForum people,

My $0.02...
The degree of signal-to-noise on a forum/NG is directly porportional to how well "trolls" are delt with.

Definition - from a trolling website:
troll v.,n. To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies"; which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling";, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.

Trolls are a fact of internet life (some are even amusing), but most get bored quickly when NO ONE takes their bait. If a troll finds a site where "the fish" are biting, they camp out - and this forum seems to have several "newbie trollers".

Now, if we fish are smart and don't bite, the troll weighs anchor and motors away to find another "target rich" site - there's plenty out there.

So, next time you feel the urge to "put that <fill in troll descriptor here> in their place", you're doing exactly what the troll intended.

Folks that agree will do nothing more than post a "bring to top msg.". Anything more is encouraging the trolls, who just might be clueless enough to respond to this msg.

In case you haven't noticed, this msg. is a troll, albeit a benevolent one.
-
