You can wear what you want. There are a lot of snobs who choose to go on vacation at the Côte d'Azur, but also normal people do. If you want to see real snobs,go to Monaco. But it is a fantastic town, worth the visit. Go visit the rock (take the elevators if you prefere or go by foot) and visit the palace of the prince. There are a lot of small streets upon the rock with shops and restaurants.
If you have a car you can also make a drive along "La Corniche" (dark red rocks along the coast). Just enjoy your stay.
But... if it was I, I would choose a vacation more nearby the Spanish border, "Le Roussillon". There is much more to see there:nice beaches at your left and the Pyrénées at your right. A beautiful nature with a lot of history.
Very interesting country. Maybe another time...?

I love the Cote d'Azur area because there's so much art to see there. In Nice alone there's the Contemparary Art Museum, Chagall Musuem, Matisse Museum and more...then nearby there's Picasso in Antibes, and Renoir, etc. etc. And lots of great towns such as Mougin and St. Paul de Vance.

I think there're all kinds of people everywhere and I meet lots of good people in the Cote d'Azur area.

Loved the Riviera. We stayed in Cannes last summer 2families (5 teen girls) at the Carlton Intercontinental. Don't worry about flip flops and casual beach wear. Most were casual, the biggest difference was that a good number of European women just don't wear bathing suit tops.
Evenings we wore sundress or capris - nothing very fancy.
You'll find some people dress up more than others like anywhere else (more fine jewelry especially).
Service at every hotel and restaurant was fabulous. Can't wait to go back.
