Between Chillon and Vevey, I wasn't paying attention to the shore -- I was awed by the views of snow-capped mountains to the northeast, the east, the southeast, and the south. Awesome!

I thought the views of the vineyards interesting, but more because I had walked through them the day before ( ) than because of their interest value as seen from the lake.

Time of year might matter; I was in that area in late May.

I too loved walking thru the vineyards that clad the westward facing slopes behind Montreux - I took the train up to a station in the middle of the vineyards and zigzagged down the hill thru the vines, with the lake lovingly in sight the whole way down.

From Montreux or Vevey or Lausanne, etc you can take the boats on Lac LeMan over to France, to Evian-les-Bains, a swank mineral water resort - famous of course for Evian mineral water - there is a swank casino and lakeside - so a bit of France can easily be reached by boat - Swiss Passes if you have them covering the fare in full, even in French waters.

"The best rides on Lake Geneva are between Vevey and Lausanne">

What is that about a five-minute boat ride?

You are getting a four day Swiss Pass but it looks like you intend to use it from the 4th to the 8th. Each day is counted so that will make it 5 days of travel. I am doing the same days with the same pass so that really caught my eye. I'm staying in Lauterbrunnen which is a nice little town with options to go to Murren or Wengen and hike from there. Easy to get to Interlaken and out from there or to Grindlewald. One beautiful area of the world.

Oh yes, kja, I think being there in May may have made the vineyards less interesting! From November - middle June, they are pretty much brown sticks in mud! From the middle of June until the middle of September, they are lush and green -- but in September and October, they are riots of golden russet. Just gorgeous.

PalQ, the ride from Vevey to Lausanne is longer than the one from Montreux to Chillon -- which is the one you proposed!!

@ swandav -- LOL -- that's what the grape vines were: "brown sticks in mud," but at least the terraces were interesting and the occasional village or winery were worth noting from the boat. If I have the great good fortune to visit the area again, I will try to see the Lavaux from the lake at a more favorable time of year. Whether I have that chance or not, I continue to savor my memories of walking through those vineyards (despite freezing rain, which I believe was quite unusual for that late in the year). From my walking perspective, it wasn't just sticks and mud -- there were some gorgeous raindrop-bedecked blooms and barely frosted roots or branches and misty views of sun-kissed waters by the shoreline and dramatic glimpses of the magnificent snowcapped mountains to the far side of the lake when the clouds parted, even if ever so briefly.... WELL worth getting thoroughly drenched and chilled to the bone.

I proposed that as a neat way of going to Chillon not that it was the most scenic stretch of lake - I would recommend a boat ride over to Evian-les-Bains (France) and back - going across the lake not just along its shore.
