As a part of a trip to the UK, and after a week in London, I am planning a trip to Scotland. I would like to spend a few days in Edinburgh and would very much like to go to Skye. I will be travelling by public transportation. I know that I can get to Mallaig by train, and would very much like to take the Ft. William-Mallaig train trip, but how do I get around Skye? I could either do a day trip or say for a day or two. I will be returning to London for my trip back to the States. Any ideas would be welcome. I am a woman travelling alone.

A lot of people do Skye by public transport - a LOT of hikers/backpackers congergate on Skye. It is easier by car - but there is a useful bus service on the Isle so you won't have many problems getting around.

Do take the train to Mallaig and then ferry to Skye. You can catch a bus from the Armadale ferry pier.

the buses in Skye are pricey - I think it's about 5 pounds one way from Kyleakin to Armadale, but totally worth it because the scenery is like nothing you've ever seen. Or maybe you have. *I* had never seen anything like it.

and also, if funds are tight, don't be afraid to hitchhike. I wish i had saved my $8 and taken the ride offered by the nice elderly gentleman (but i was with my mom and she vetoed it).

There is a B&B I stayed at in Skye, called Tir Alainn (Beautiful Country in Gaelic), which is within walking distance of the main road, just south of Broadford... (i.e., could get a bus ride there ). The host is delightful, the rooms large, and the place clean and cozy, with a wonderful view! It was £25 PP for us in 2000.
