Trip To Rome - Day in Venice?

Our friends are travelling to Rome for four days and wanted to see Venice while on this side of the world. There are cheap airfare tickets available or the train, I don't know too much information about the train, would you be able to help? Also are they taking on too much? How far is it by train or air? I know they would FLIP OUT just to see the place. Thanks folks!

By train the Euro Star (ES), is a 4.5 hour ride. Easy to do but not sure how much time they are planning on spending there, I would not recommend this for a day trip if that's what they are thinking.

Best, Eileen

4 days is barely enough time to see ROme. And Venice as a day trip is a bit much in any case. I'd discourage it.

Even with a flight, obviously you have to get to and from the airport in both Rome and Venice. I think this would most likely take even longer than the train ride! Have they booked their tickets already? If not, an open jaw flight into Venice and out of Rome would make this idea slightly more reasonable.

I would say they should play it by ear. If, after they have spent a couple days in Rome, they feel like seeing somewhere else, maybe they could train to Florence or some other closer city. I agree that a day trip to Venice from Rome would be too much. I could spend weeks in Rome and still feel like I hadn't seen it all! It's so impressive!

Thanks again for your help - I am glad to say I convinced them to stay and do the Rome thing instead!
