I agree Dijon is bigger than Beaune, but it is very easy to walk around. No big avenues in the historic centre.
I like to quote orval (who is no longer on fodors I'm afraid) who said here :

I first visited there during the day, and was intrigued by the compactness of the place, which is the opposite of what I have just read in the thread above. The town center is medieval and lovely, with passerelles, or walking streets filled with shops.
We stayed the second time for several days, and when we went down to the center of the town, we were enthralled by the beauty of the medieval streets that were lit up magnificently. It was a place that I had looked for for many years of travelling in France. The change from day to night was amazing. There were couples arm in arm, strolling at midnight and beyond, with nary a care re: crime or crowds. There were quaint little boîtes and clubs as well as restos and bistros. We fell in love with Dijon. To each his own.>

And you can go to Beaune for a day trip (20min by train).

My husband and I rented a farm house outside of Beaune for 6 weeks. I would suggest that you take the TGV from Paris to Dijon and rent a car at the train station there. Then drive to Beaune after a walk around Dijon.(You MUST go to the Mallie mustard store in Dijon) As far as where to stay in Beaune, it would depend on what you want to spend. Beaune is the heart of Burgundy and fairly centrally located to most regions. Also, if you can go to Alsace....do! It is such an interesting part of France! I will say that you loose some time driving to and from. If you go to www.butterfeildandrobinson.com or www.backroads.com and check out what they suggest for places to stay in Burgundy. They are pretty reliable for great ideas for places to stay. Good luck! Libby

I'd agree with those who suggest Beaune as a base for Burgundy. Six of us stayed at Le Cep in 2002 and found the hotel and the town of Beaune utterly charming. Beaune is a favorite among all the cities we have visited in France. Hotel Le Cep is just inside the city walls, so makes for a perfect location. Beaune had a Saturday morning market that was delightful. I have a few restaurant recommendations:

We also did a splurge meal at Lameloise in Changny (20 minutes from Beaune (3* Michelin at the time -- I think it may have been downgraded to two recently). If you can afford, do a splurge meal somewhere -- they certainly are an experience!
