LB: I did ask my sister. They spent only two nights in Florence and they were at the Torre Bellosquardo which is just outside of the actual city. So she was no help with eating in Florence proper but she said she will try to get some eating tips from the relative living near there. If she does so, I will report back.

On a vaguely related note, the hotel rents an apartment on the grounds that looks interesting since renters can use some of the hotel facilities.

You are the BEST-- thanks so much for all of your on-going help.
I had posted on Chowhound about Leo's Santa Croce-and received some fantastic feedback on it. Just hoping they're open- For our second night I am looking into Il Guscio as well as Alla Vecchia Bettola.

I also noticed in your post that you ate at Nerbone-- if we can get near it (and if its open) I know my sons will love it. Someone posted recently about the "best sandwich" in Rome (I'm guessing porchetta) right near the Pantheon. Again-- with Brother Jimmy's being my older son's idea of culinary heaven-- I have a feeling we'll be in good shape for lunches or that all important post-lunch snack for boys.
On another Rome note- within the last few days a Chowhound poster listed a pretty good sampling of restaurants that are OPEN during August--- many of the ones we had hoped to vist appear to be closed but I was directed to L'Angoletto (which is both open and near the Pantheon)for that all-important first night! They have a reservation service similar to OpenTable and so far it seems to be available.

EK,
This is a great trip report, thanks. My wife and I are going to Florence and Milan the week between Christmas and New Years, with a stop along the motorway in between (probably Bologna). We've been to Tuscany several times, but this will be my first time in Milan, and we will take your recommendations for Bologna.

Hi ekzcrunchy-
after reading you rinfo above, I wondered if you had any up to date info on the restaurants and incredible food of Italy-
Are the restarants still the same from 2006?Venice, florence, Rome,Pienza, Cinque Terre, Montelpuciano?
thanks so much,

From the new (May 2011) Italy issue of Bon Appetit magazine, here is an article on Emilia Romagna by David Downie; he recommends both Da Cesari and da Giannni where we had two excellent meals during our stay in Bologna:

eks - we're eating at Da Cesari in a few weeks. I think da Gianni is closed on Sunday. It's been hard to find restaurants for that day. We have Cesarina - know anything about that?

CPS: I will be so eager to read about your trip!

My SF book says Da Gianni is open Sunday lunch. And maybe Da Giggina..the guide says "no fixed closing day."

Another SlowFood that seems to be open Sundays is Trattoria Meloncello, but it gets some negative comments on Chowhound...

I don't know Cesarina. Seems to elicit a range of opinions...

Why not e-mail your hotel and ask them for a list of places they recommend. then we can look them over...

eks - I originally felt that a hotel might steer me to a more touristy place, but I'm going to do it and see what they come up with. I'll report back.

I heard back from the hotel and they suggested Cesarina (which got some bad reviews) and Da Nello which has a link to Tauck Tours which is a bad sign to me. Also, their website doesn't show any photos of the food - another bad omen? Woe is me!

I've been emailing the hotel. I'm going with Drogheria della Rosa partly because it looks better and it was given a thumbs up in a TR (foodie) here. We are going to Bologna because my husband wants to eat there! In the future, I will think twice about where we are on a weekend.

EKS, what are you referencing when you refer to a Slowfood restaurant? I understand the movement and have been to the website, but I don't see a list of recommended restaurants.

CPS: Weekends can be perplexing for a tourist in Italy. Witness my travails for a sunday that happens to be May 1, detailed on that long Puglia thread...

Uflecku: I have the SlowFood Osterie & Locande guide in English. But you can also find the affiliated restaurants on their website, even if that is a tricky process. If you are not a member, you can see only the ones from 2006, the date the first, and last, English guide was published, but I don't think they have changed the list too much since then.

Go to the website and click on "Scelti per voi" in one of the lists in the gray-shaded area. then clock on "Scelti per voi--Le Osterie." Then find your region. It is in Italian.
