You guys did a very good job of budgeting. Well done.
And, yes, most things do cost twice as much as in the US given the exchange rate. Some supermarket items are the exception (cost less than twice).

Thanks for your report. However, it just confirms my desire to not take the kids to London until the dollar is stronger (will that EVER happen?) I don't want to eat at Pizza Hut and Burger King on vacation (although it would probably be just fine with the kids).

missypie, London is expensive for Americans to visit, to be sure, but it is possible to eat in London inexpensively without getting American fast food. There are lots of threads on here about budget places to eat in London. One thing we've done quite often: supermarket and department store food halls are a great place to pick up ready to eat food, sandwiches, fruit, yogurts, and many tempting desserts.

I just got back from studying abroad in London for 4 months. The Holiday Inn you stayed at is directly across the street from my house!! Reading your report brought back some wonderful memories! *Sidenote* I, too, would recommend the Holiday Inn Gloucester Rd. My mom and sister stayed there when they visited me- very clean and great location. Suggestion: There are some really great cheap places to eat by this HI. Cafe Forum is right down the street from the Tube stop (turn to your right out of the stop and cross the street- it's on the right). Wonderful desserts and very cheap meals- pasta and pizza- 6gbp or less. IMO, a much better meal than Burger King. There is a Thai restaurant(the name is escaping me ) very close also. Walk down Ashburn Gardens and cross the street- you'll be staring at it. Very small, but great food! They serve lunch prices till 4pm so we would go there alot for an early dinner. Hope these tips are helpful.

It is not on Gloucester Road, it is at the Gloucester Road tube station. The Holiday Inn Kensington Forum is at 97 Cromwell. The other Holiday Inn is at 100 Cromwell. If you take a left out of the tube station, cross Cromwell and go left, you will see the HI banners on the building. If you keep going past the first HI, you will see the HI Forum on your left. It is a very tall building. However, like I mentioned earlier, the entrance is not off Cromwell, it is on the back side. So, it is better to go right out of the tube station, and right down the first street. You will pass the Millenium Hotel on your left.
