Hi ssander. You have written an elaborate report & I have noted the worthy points, especially about the suggested walk routes. I am spain-bound in August and look forward to enriching experiences!

ssander,
I love your report and all the information and am saving this for our trip next year.

After too much time obsessing over the "perfect" place, I booked Hostal Acapulco, thanks to your recommendation, for our trip in the spring, and Javier has been a wonderful correspondent. I feel comfortable and reassured that we made a good choice for our stay. So I want to say thanks! in advance.

I am surprised by your glowing review of the hostal Acapulco in Madrid. The area is definitely seedy-very close to C/Montera.Did you feel safe at hours of the day?
I don't like the fact that their website doesn't quote prices.
Didn't you find having to go up/down the Gran Via to the more interesting places in Madrid tiring?

Just wanted to let you know I found this very useful. Just posted looking for advice on a Madrid, Cordoba, Seville trip and got some good ideas on it from here. (I am skipping Granda this trip I have a few less days then you do!)

Chapla...

We always felt safe in the area around Hostal Acapulco, and we actually liked the location...very close to Sol. Not as good as some other hotels, perhaps, but nearly everything in the historic core of Madrid is in close walking distance, and if you need the Metro, you're situated inside a triangle bounded by three close major Metro stops.

As for prices, I do understand how you might like to see prices on the website. The first time we went -- 2006 --they didn't even have a working website, so this is actually an improvement. And their prices are good.

Both times we were there, we contacted them by email to discuss reservations and prices. I'm in the habit of doing it that way. Often -- but not always -- I get a price that is better than the price shown on the website.

CarolA...

I agree with Chapla...if you can only visit either Cordoba or Granada, I'd opt for Granada -- because of the Alhambra.

However...trains between Granada and Madrid stop in Cordoba.

If you are heading back to Madrid, you can easily take a morning train (9:10) from Granada that arrives in Cordoba before noon (11:31), see the mosque, have some lunch, and still have time to catch a late afternoon fast train (15:06 or 16:29) that gets you into Madrid (16:55 or 18:15) with plenty of time to relax before dinner (in Madrid usually 20:00 at the earliest)

Progol...

I forgot to tell you, there is a website called MadridMan that is IMHO an incredible, essential resource for travel in Madrid -- and elsewhere in Spain.

http://www.madridman.com

Amazing discussion boards on every topic related to Madrid peopled by many locals with up-to-the-minute info about food, lodging, transport and sights.
