Trenitalia has just enabled bookings for summer 2014
Have you been waiting patiently for Trenitalia to upload its schedules for summer 2014? Well, waiting time is now over!
Trenitalia has now uploaded its schedules for summer 2014 for all "national" trains EXCEPTING the Intercity and the unreserved regionale trains (which will be uploaded later). To be precise, schedules have been uploaded for 265 trains: 95 Frecciarossa, 55 Frecciargento, 74 Frecciabianca, 28 Eurocity and 13 Euronight.
These trains can now be BOOKED up to FOUR MONTHS in advance (today through July 6, 2014).
Schedules are searchable through December 13, 2014.
Competitor ITALO trains can be booked through October 25, 2014 (advantage ITALO)!!!
Note HOW MANY of the Freccia trains are priced at 19 and 29 Euros RIGHT NOW. This is prime fishing time to get the lowest fares!!!
Before you jump ahead and book, remember that the discounted fares are for the most part all non-refundable, and the SUPER ECONOMY fares and the TWO FOR ONE fares are ALSO non-changeable. Think before you book!!!
Also remember that the REGIONALE trains are not reservable, and that there is no financial advantage or incentive to book tickets for these trains electronically in advance. Better to buy traditional PAPER tickets for these trains when in Italy.

Depends on where you are going and what type of train. Trenitalia sells tickets for the faster trains 120 days out. Slow trains (regional) you do not want to buy online as there are more restrictions, no discounts, no reserved seating, etc. Regional tickets can only be bought online 7 days out.

TRENITALIA will allow customers to purchase seats on the RESERVED trains for travel at the end of August FOUR MONTHS in advance (i.e. the end of April).
The Trenitalia RESERVED trains exclude the regionale commuter trains, for which it's best to buy a traditional PAPER ticket in Italy.
Arch-competitor ITALO TRENO has already enabled ticket purchases on all of its trains through and including October 25. Bear in mind that ITALO is much smaller than Trenitalia, and has no feeder commuter trains.
