Hi everyone! <BR> <BR>I'm interested in going to Europe on a freight ship (from Halifax). Has anyone ever done this? Do you know who should I contact? And how much does it cost? This plan is in the early stages, so I don't know the time,or details. As for the port, it doesn't really matter, but maybe Hamburg... By the way I'm a student (18). <BR> <BR>Lindi

I am anxious to see if this post receives any replies. Ever since I read that Alex Haley ("Roots") wrote some of his books on freight ships, I've always wanted to give the freighters a try. If/when you do it, be sure to come back and tell about it.

Hi, Lindi, <BR>Several choices, check out http://www.freighterworld.com or http://cruisemaris.com/freighters.html. <BR>Most pax on frieghter cruises tend to be "mature" travelers (not us, of course) but on a transpacific trip we made last winter we noted some murals painted on the exterior walls of the container ship we were on; it turns out the company (Columbus Line/Hamburg Sud in our case) will consider (depending on no. of passengers, plus?) taking on "work for passage" people who will paint or do some other work (not dangerous) in exchange for berth and breakfast. Might be worth investigating. Freighter travel is a hoot.

Several years ago I met someone who had come across the Atlantic on freight ships. She went from Scotland to Iceland, then to Greenland and then to Canada. <BR> <BR>I looked at some cargo companies' web pages earlier this year and some mentioned they took paying passengers. I imagine they would deal with you for work- exchange. <BR>Andrew

I found a fantastic website that is a travel agent that does nothing but book people on freighters. There are all kinds, big, little etc. They are not as cheap as flying- the cheapest is about $65 a day. The accomodations were nice. If you come into cheap flight forum you can use the search link at the top to find the post I am referring- e mail me if you have any problems.
