Traveller's cheques
Hello
I'm 14 and I'll visit Dublin with my school.
I wouldn't want to take so much cash with me.
Can I bring traveller's cheques to be cash in banks?
If yes, do all the banks cash traveller's cheques?
If I lost them, how can I obtain cash ?
If somebody find them can they cash my traveller's cheques easily?
Many thanks in advance!

Hi PB,
TCs are too much trouble to cash.
This is one of the few times when a prepaid cheque card might be in order. See http://tinyurl.com/2hh4ke

Hi Pati
As this is a school trip, your teacher or trip supervisor will have information about this. He or she will have a system that she wants each of you to follow for this trip.
It is a great question. You will probably have many more excellent questions before your trip. You and your parents will for sure receive an information package that addresses all of them. As well I bet that there will be a meeting where you can get all your questions answered.
Have fun.

Yes any bank will cash a travelers check, you may have to show your passport. Other people can't cash your checks because you sign them once when you buy them, then sign again as you cash them. They will give you instructions for what to do should they get lost.
I agree with the suggestion above to ask your tour group leader how other people will be handling getting money.
I also agree that a prepaid cash card might be more convenient, then you would use an ATM machine to withdraw the money.
Lastly you could also get a travel money belt. These are made so you carry your cash in the belt, worn under your clothes for security (you just take a little out at a time and keep somewhere else easier to get to).
Lucky you, getting to travel so young! Have a safe and fun trip.

There are several Travel cards which are a better idea for a young traveler. A travel card allows monie sto be deposited in to your account if an emergency occurs and will alert your parents if the money gets below a certain set amount.
The problem with traveller's cheques is that there is a fee assessed to the merchant when they deposit them. If you exchange them for cash, then you are assessed a fee at that point and get less money than the face value would indicate. There are some places which won't accept traveller's cheques because of the fees levied.
If this is being coordinated through a travel company, they will have information for you on travelcards and how to go about obtaining one. My son used the EFT card in Spain.
I, too, would love to hear a youth's perspective on Dublin. I hope you will write that travel report for us.
