travel with children in germany
Help! i will be in germany for two weeks with my 2 month old and 3 year old. we are staying in frankfurt for the first week, then are open for the second week but do not want to travel any farther than 3 hours by train or car. any suggestions? we will be travelling in mid-march so the weather will still be cool. thanks!

Kids three years and two months...that's a tough one.
There are several nice towns within two hours of Frankfurt, worth a look--mostly on the Rhein or Mosel Rivers.
What about a Rhein cruise (if running then)? Has a covered indoor part, food/drink or you can bring a picnic as scenic castles float by.
Koblenz advertises "Adventure Pool Taurus", but I couldn't find much more on it.
Bingen has nice roman remains and walking paths.
Boppard has a mini train tour, the Rhein Express, lasting 30 minutes, hiking paths, and a chairlift, which unfortunately, opens 1st April.
There is a mountain railway from Boppard to Buchholz with "charming stretches." A KIDS-Inn in Boppard-Buchholz is listed, with an indoor play-hall for children up to age 12.
St. Goar has a German doll museum.
Cochem offers tours of its castle Reichsburg, from "mid-March" on.
There are lots of cool shops and cafes in Cochem as well. There is a chairlift and animal park in Cochem-Klotten, but they open 7 April.

We just returned from Germany trip with our then 18 m/o. I would suggest Munich for the week.
Munich things to do: The gorgeous Englischer Garden with outside pagoda with carousel, playgrounds, etc. The beer gardens are wonderful since your kid (3y/o) can run around while you sit an enjoy a beer. I also recommend the Deutches Museum. There is a special children's section on the basement floor and your 3 y/o will think he/she has gone to heaven. You can easily fill a week visiting museums, parks, etc.
Rothenburg will not fill your time for a week and you will find yourself doing lots of day trips.

The good news is that your children should be well accepted in Germany. Our daughter was born in Germany and we lived there until she was almost 3 years old. Most hotels bent over backwards to accommodate us, her.
What your children will enjoy is unique to each child. We tried Legoland in Denmark, a zoo in Vienna, etc. Things we visited for the child did not seem to especially please our daughter. She mainly liked to be outside and run around while we were sightseeing. Castle tours would have been a non-starter.
What did surprize us was that our daughter sometimes got into museums (not for long stays). He liked the painting on the ceiling of churches and carved statues.
One place within your range is Wurzburg (less than two hours by train). It is a quaint downtown for walking about. The Marienburg Festung is a fortified castle across the river with a museum including woodcarvings by Riemenschneider, which might interest a child. There is a bishop's residence but it might only be open to tours. The gardens to the residence were more to my daughter's liking.
We used a backpack carrier and later a small, light folding-stroller, which made our lives easier and walking more enjoyable for the kid. All in all, kids can be quite adaptable.

One more quick note about the weather. Elevation makes a significant difference in temperatures. Today it was 43 degrees in Heidelberg and 36 degrees in Nurnberg. According to the Yahoo weather page, Nurnberg has an average high of 47 degrees on March 15th while Heidelberg is 51 degrees. Spring comes earlier to some locations. We would often make an early spring trip to Heidelberg to drive off the winter blues.
H. is also an easy train trip from Frankfurt.

We will be driving through Germany this summer. We plan on making a stop at Playmobil land. This seems like something fun for a three year-old. Our twins have traveled with us since they were nine months old- it's been a fantastic trip each time!
