traveler, by now you must be confused with so many differents opinions...

Just dress comfortable..wear skirts, sundresses, slack, capris, good walking shoes and sandals..

I normally wear SAS shoes and sandals, because I have some problems with my feets and needs shoes that have a very soft leather..

You can wear short sleeves in church, but Saint Peter has differents rules.

Always bring with you a large scarf to cover your arms, just in case you want to visit a church..

Regarding tennis shoes, if you feel comfortable wearing them, go ahead.
.
Nobody is going to look at your feet anyway, the locals are too busy with their life to worry what the tourists are wearing..

Buon Viaggio and enjoy charming Italy
Ciao,
kismet

Re: it true that athletic shoes will make you an obvious and uncouth tourist?

Yes. But the great part is that because you'll be wearing athletic shoes, you can outrun the things that Italians will hurl at you for being uncouth.

Actually, the locals are always looking at your feet to see where you come from - just ask the locals.

With millions of people going to Europe, i dont think that the locals are going to be scandalized and worry about what kind of shoes a tourist wear..
They couldn't care less...

For our original poster/traveler_99:
Shoes are pretty much *the* most important item to get right in your packing. I'd take at least 3 nice looking comfortable pairs so you can switch them off (maybe wear rubber sole black ankle boots on the plane plus 2 others pairs in your suitcase).

Take some time now & go shopping, see what fits your feet and style best. Then wear them around alot, so you are not breaking them in on your trip.

As to why my fellow-fodorites are so dang cranky on this thread, I have no idea. Why open a post that clearly asks for advice about "travel wear" just to make a bunch of snotty and oh-so-(not)-clever comments?

I have just bought 2 pairs of very comfortable Rockport shoes which are an Italian made shoe. A brown pair and a flat pair of short black boots which will go with everything. Am planning to buy fashion shoes in Italy. Having lived in Italy their dress is the same as ours in Australia going out wear something nice, for walking all day go for comfort. However French and Italian women do look better in a sack cloth!! but there is nothing we can do about this it is just something they have. Will be back home begining of May will let you know

Anyone who would advise that churches in Europe are exactly like churches in the U.S. might be expected to travel all the way to Dubai to go to a water park. What's next on your itinerary, Denny's in Milan? 7Eleven in Brussels?

Have you even been to Europe? For that matter, have you ever glanced beyond your own toffee-colored nose? You really take the cake for worthless posters. You make m kingdom seem like the Michelin guide. Now go away and plan the rest of your trip. I'm sure there's a skateboard park just waiting for you in Saudi Arabia.

Imitation is the highest form of cyber-flattery...

Glad that I increased some of your vocabulary by adding Jimmy Choo and Talbots at a minimum...

The elementary analysis...those why? travel fashion questions...is also an excellent contribution to the intellectual vaccum that was displayed last night long after I went on with my LIFE...

Let's see...I encouraged you to "color"...I mean use graphics...nice progress...very good and creative too!

That cutting, pasting, italic work was also a hint of the fullness that you bring to the travel boards...good on ya!

And, you have created "nick or pet" names...wow! What an excellent use of your time and how much value that added to the post on TRAVEL WEAR...

Oh, capri pants and SAS shoes were added back...that's a fashion tragedy but at least that was "true" to the travel topic under examination...

Some of you enjoy a "party" also known as flamming...that is nice to know.

One of you is obsessed with buggers...charming. May all posters take your travel, fashion and other advice seriously...yes, I was right to wash my hands...

Let's see "target practice" did you say?

Why the VIOLENCE? Is your lack of class, decourm and intelligence not bad enough?
Your opinion being different from mine allows you no civil way to dissent?

The best thing out of this thread of disgust is that one of your "Travel Fashion Gang Members" is gone.

Some of you are clearly bipolar as you are now, as of today, signing the merits of wearing Pink in Paris...

Just like the elementary school girls...petty, jealous, sad...todays: cyber-bullies...

May you not be allowed the opportunity to find someone else who enjoys fashion and travel to ridicule, pick-on and
harass. Not my boards, not my regulations, not my call...

Again, carry on, IF YOU CAN, without ME!

Oaktown, don't take all this so seriously. The truth is, no one can give advice on what to wear because our tastes differ. We are allowed to say that all Black clothes are boring, IMO, and shows lack of creativity but really who cares. I think your posts are fun.
COMFORT is the key word when you feel comfortable you have a better time.

Steve: Reading comprehension must not be one of your strong suits. I never said churches were exactly the same in europe and the u.s.,and I never advocated dressing inappropiately in any church. For the record, in the last 10 years we have traveled through 19 countries in europe and the middle east. One summer we used a eurail pass and traveled for 34 days. I`ll be sure to think of you while we are sitting around the pool at the BURJ-AL-ARAB hotel.

I actually feel a tiny bit bad about laughing at Oaktown whatshername if she finds this all too reminiscent of school days when she was picked on ..
Please accept my apologies, I think some of us find different ways to amuse ourselves and our senses of humour are varied. What you find funny or interesting is probably a bore to others also-so don't take it all so seriously.
sighing AND shaking my head,
Scarlett

What was that ???
"We can see the lack of maintenance which is unfortunately very "American Travel Woman" and reflects badly on you and your lack of hygeine(sp) habits".

Wasn't that always "Very European Women" on this forum who do not shave?
