Travel in 2003

Where are you traveling to in 2003? Are you going back to some of your favorite places or somewhere new?

I'm considering a trip that would drive most of you Fodorites crazy if I posted it as an itinerary. I have been craving several of my favorite bike rides and restaurants from previous trips. It would mean going from Paris to Sorrento in two weeks with stops in Lyon, Locarno (and the Centovalli), Siena, and Rome. I never consider a day spent on a train in Europe a wasted day because I love seeing the countryside (a peek someone tending a field, the way grapevines are planted on top of an orange grove, kids riding bikes, people talking at a train station, what kind of laundry is hanging out the window, a huge field of sunflowers). I'm hoping that I can match this trip up with a bike ride with my fellow fans of Switzerland.

Going to Paris, Lyon, and Barcelona in
February for a total of 2 weeks.
Looking forward to aimlessly wandering the streets of Paris, visting my
favorite fabric store in the Marais,
visiting le Palais de Tokyo for the first time, train rides through the country side, and the adventures of visting Lyon and Barcelona for the first time!

I'm doing a three week mad dash to Amsterdam, Munich, Venice, Florence, Rome and Paris. This is my first trip to Europe, so I am trying to do as much as possible! I have spent a small fortune on guidebooks and lurk on this site nearly every day. I am leaving for my trip in April and I get more excited with each passing day!

Mine is a combination of the two -- some old favorites and a few new places.

Stopping in NYC for a few days on my way from Florida to London. Fifteen days in the flat we've rented a number of times in London, then returning to Berlin for 5 nights (ran out of time two years ago with 5 nights then also). Three nights in Leipzig, visiting Dresden as well. Then a week in an apartment in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (somewhere we've always missed). Three nights in Stuttgart, 2 nights in Basel, then 3 in Weggis, 3 in Poschavio and 4 in Chur (two places I recently got turned on to by an article in Travel and Leisure and then discussed at length here), 3 nights in Saas Fee, also a new destination and a change from Zermatt, 4 nights in Gstaad where we've only day tripped before, 3 nights in Montreaux, and then a week in Paris (almost like home). May 27 to August 3 all together. Home for about 10 days before heading to Oregon and California with friends for two and a half weeks.
Travel is my "summer home" away from Florida.

I am excited to be returning to Bangkok for 4 days, Saigon 4 days, Hanoi 4 days, and then to Phuket for 9 days before returning home. This is mainly a return to visit friends. This is my 3rd year to return. In 2 weeks I will be on my way. Traveled to NY City 5 days in November with my daughter meeting my college roommate. 4 days to Vegas before Christmas. A cousin who had never traveled was my main reason for this trip. She was definitely thrilled. In May my daughter and I will go for 3 weeks to Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest. Maybe to Cuba in July with a old friend.
This has definitely been my travel year. This was my plan after teaching school for many years and I am loving every minute of my retirement. I am very thankful to be able to do this and continue learning about our wonderful world and its people.

I wonder how many Fodorites have been watching the fall in value taken by the U. S. dollar in recent months. From a low of around 88 cents, the Euro has risen to $1.04 today, with no end in sight. That's an 18 per cent drop in value of the dollar...so far. Better take this into calculating the costs of your European holiday! My reponse: nuts -- I'm staying home.

My response to the falling USD: buy Euros, or Euro-denominated unit trusts/mutual funds.

My niece is getting married in Maui in May so I probably won't make it back to Europe in 2003 unless I can squeeze in a trip later in the year!

First week of March I'm off to Oaxaca, Mexico - a destination I've been wanting to go to for three years. In September I'm going back to Croatia - thinking of flying into Split, hanging there for 2 days then off to Hvar for 4 days, then Dubrovnik for 3 days. In October, to celebrate turning 40, I'm off to Istanbul for at least a full week. I'm hoping I can finagel(sp?) another week of vacation for late May and go to Madeira - this place has dung its way into my pysche lately.

Happy and safe travels to all.
