travel fussen to venice

We are flying to Frankfurt and staying in Rothenburg the first night, and then driving the Romantic Road and staying in Fussen the next night. We want to get to Venice the next night and would appreciate advice on most senic way to get there. Or, should we go by train? Can anyone help with advice on roads and routes?

Off the top of my head i would say that driving MIGHT be a better option simply because to get to almost anywhere out of Fuessen by rail you'd have to go at least as far as Buchloe if not all the way to Munich to make connections.

I'm not sure that driving "the most scenic route" and getting (to Venice) "the next night" are compatible but will top this for you.

I have no firsthand experience, but this will top the post and maybe help you out.

Here is the rail site for Germany, I find it useful for checking travl times anywhere in Europe.
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

A quick check for travel time by train is 9-10+ hours. And you do need to change Munich. When you use the site, I used Fuessen for the departure (and then Fuessen Bahnhof when the dropdown box appears) and Venezia for the arrival (and S. Lucia from the next dropdown).

I use www.mappy.com for driving directions and times. Driving time looks lke about 5 hours. There is also www.viamichelin.com that I use.

Have a fun trip!

Glenn - If you're driving you can do a magnificent route through the Dolomites.

The best route from the Brenner IMO would be:

Val Gardena - Gardena Pass - Corvara - Valparola/Falzarego Pass - Cortina - Venice.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for all the advice.....we will most likely take Steve's advice and drive from Fussen to Venice as I would really like to pass through Cortina. I know this sounds like a rushed trip but we will be spending all of September in Italy staying in Venice, Verona, Bellagio on Lake Como, Monterosso in Cinque Terre, Montepulciano in Tuscany, Rome, and finally in Positano. If anyone wants to give me any advice on "must see's" in these areas, please go ahead.
Steve, have you ever driven that route from Fussen to Venice? We are from Sydney Australia, so are used to driving long distances.

Hi glenn, I have no driving advice but when I read how long and where you are staying I had to say congratulations for such a wonderful trip!
In Venice, see as much as you can! Verona, has 2 ampitheatres-try to see both
Bellagio on Lake Como, Take ferry to as many places as you can!
Rome, Find as many Bernini statues as possible and you will be awed!
Positano, just relax! See Capri, Sorrento and Pompeii if poss.
Enjoy enjoy enjoy!

Glenn - I haven't driven the Fussen-Innsbruck part, but I know the Innsbruck-Venice part very well.
I'd recommend an early start.

You might want to take some of the lifts between Gardena and Cortina for some wonderful Dolomite views. And there are several lovely places to stop en route. When are you going?

Hope this helps ...

Steve, as we have only allowed one day from Fuessen to Venice, mainly to view the scenery, don't know that we will have much time to do any lifts, but would really appreciate your advice on several stops between the two destinations, one of course being in Cortina. We will be there early September. Rgds, Glenn

Glenn - These are all nice stopping points on the Dolomites route:

ORTISEI - Attractive Tyrolean village.

SELVA - Cable car (Ciampinoi) for great Dolomite views. (Restaurant/cafe at top ...)

COLFOSCO - Photo point (- among many )

CORVARA - Attractive Tyrolean village.

SAN CASSIANO - Ditto

LAGAZUOI - Awesome cable car ride at junction of Valparola/Falzarego Pass. Superb panoramic views ...

CORTINA

Hope this helps ...

Steve, I tried putting these stopovers in both mappy & viamichelin and am getting 2 different route numbers to follow. What am I doing wrong?

I'm taking this same trip (Germany to Venice) next Sept/Oct. and this is exactly the type of drive I'm looking for.

Thanks for your help.

Lydia - Forget Mappy & Michelin. My directions are better

From Brenner Pass:

- Continue south following signs for Bressanone/ Bolzano.

- After Bressanone exit motorway following signs for VAL GARDENA.

- Continue up Val Gardena (via Ortisei & Selva).

- Above Selva (5 km) turn left signposted PASSO GARDENA/ Corvara.

- At Corvara turn left signposted Brunico.

- After 5 km at La-Villa-in-Badia turn right signposted PASSO VALPAROLA/ San Cassiano.

- At top of Valparola Pass (Lagazuoi cablecar) turn left signposted CORTINA.

It's very straightforward - you can't go wrong ...

Buon Viaggio
