My husband and I and our 2 teenage daughters are going to be in Barcelona for 41/2 days this summer and then we travel to the San Sebastian area for 31/2 days, probably staying in St. Jean de Luz.
Friends recently told us about the beautiful cave paintings in Northern Spain and we were wondering if it would be possible and reasonable to see one site. We had been thinking of taking a day trip to Bilbao but, if not too far, could try to see cave paintings instead. We were hoping to get around without renting a car but could do so if necessary.

Have tried to find the distance between San Sebastian and cave sights but really didn't find anything clarifying.

you are looking for the Tito Bustillo caves. They are located near Ribadesella, and yes, you will need a car. You could get a bus to Ribadesella but it will be easier with a car.

Ribadesella is a long haul from St-Jean-de-Luz for a day trip, about a 3-1/2 to 4 hour drive. It's about 2-1/2 hours from Bilbao.

Why do people choose St. Jean de Luz over San Sebastian?

Thought of St Jean because it's smaller, more low key, can send our girls off on their own more easily and a kind of break between Barcelona and Paris, our next stop.

I haven´t been. My aunt and uncle have a house near Llanes, and they have been a couple of times. They say that the caves are really interesting.

But I wouldn´t go there only for the caves. The whole area is lovely and different to your standard view of Spain. Llanes, Ribadesella, the tiny coves on the coast, the "bufones" ( holes in the ground that let the waves come up with high tides or storms )
