travel from Naples to Capri

We will be in naples in the early part of june. we have been told that we must go to capri. we want to travel to the island by hovercraft, apparently there is on that leaves from the port of naples. can anyone tell me how we go about finding out about travel schedules, rates and travel time?

I wouldn't recommend the hovercraft - I got sea sick and so did everyone else i talked to. Just keep that in mind. We loved taking the slow boat there from sorrento. we sat outside on the deck and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It was well worth the extra travel time.

There is a ferry service by hydrofoil (aliscafo in Italian) between Naples and points south. We travelled from Positano to Naples that way, stopping in Capri en route. Nobody got seasick...

The hydrofoil is a great way to get around, but it can be hard to find the schedule from here. Try using a search engine to locate In Italy Online -- they have a transport section with a lot of info. Some years back, Conde Nast Traveler had a piece about travelling by ferry to Mediterranean islands -- you might find it in their archives.
Buon viaggio, and happy surfing!

We were in Sorrento in March and if I had only one day to spend in the area of Capri or the Amalfi Coast - it wouldn't be Capri. I know this sounds like heresy but Capri is INCREDIBLY touristy, rather awkward to get to and other parts of the Amalfi Coast are more interesting (in my opinion, obviously). If you can take a hydrofoil to Positano or Amalfi (the town) that would be my first choice.

Ooops - hit 'send' too soon. I would also consider going to Ischia instead of Capri.

Just back from a week in Capri. We used the hydrofoil from Mergelinna harbour. Departures are scheduled once every hour; however some unexpected cancellings may happen. Official time for the hydrofoil is 50 minutes to Capri for a cost of 16,000 Liras (+ 4,000 Liras for luggage, should you have some). In fact travel time was 35 minutes. Regular ferries leave from the harbour (sorry I don't have the name in mind) and also provide service once every hour. I think the cost is a little bit cheaper.
