travel from London- advice needed
My daughter will be studying in London next semester. She will have one week off in March and I am planning to fly over to travel with her that week. (coming from Boston)
I have been to London several times, so I am thinking that it might make more sense for me to travel to a different country and have her join me there. I understand that it will be inexpensive for her to travel with-in Europe (is this true?)
We have not been to Italy or Greece, so I am considering those as options, though I am open to any suggestions.
(We have already been to France and Germany, so those are probably not of interest to us).
Any suggestions on the best place to visit in March- thinking about weather, cost, distance from London, etc. She will probably just have the week, including 2 weekends.
We pretty much would like to see all of the typical tourist sites where ever we go,(Museums, etc.) but also shop, (love local markets), eat in small local restaurants, walk a lot.
I know this is a very broad question, but I really would appreciate any thoughts or comments!

I think meeting your daughter in another country is a great idea, that way it's more of a holiday for her too. We lived in London for a few years and it's easy and fairly cheap to fly to loads of places in Europe, especially if she can book early (the earlier she books, the cheaper it will be). As you're flying from Boston it may be a lot harder for you to easily get to certain destinations, for example Croatia is a wonderful country but not sure how you would reach Dubrovnik, whereas your daughter can easily fly there direct from London with a cheap airline. This website shows who flies where in Europe(budget airlines only). Arrow down to where it say 'I want to fly from...'

Greece is wonderful but maybe not in March - to me it's more of a warm weather place and the islands will be very quiet. Italy is a good idea, Venice is a special place, we were there in March one year and really enjoyed that it was quieter than it would be in peak season. Another option is Belgium, your daughter can catch the Eurostar to Brussels (again the earlier she books the cheaper it is) and you could fly into Brussels. Have a few days there then train to Brugge for a few days, which is very picturesque and has some good shopping. They also have a nice market in the big square at the top of town, I think Wed and Sat but you would have to check. Ghent is also lovely and I've heard good things about Antwerp. Amsterdam is within easy reach by train too. The travel distances are quite short once you are in Europe so you could stay in a couple of different places during your week.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

My daughter taught in London for a year after finishing her schooling. I met her in Paris for a week-long break during that time. We each had been in Paris before but never together until then. It was such a fun and memorable week. We stayed near the Sorbonne in the 5th, spent our days visiting museums, markets, Montmartre, Pere Lachaise cemetery, Versailles, etc, shopping, walking all over town, and enjoying wonderful food and wine. We both returned home, her to London, me to Oregon, with special skirts and tops that we still wear to this day and that never fail to bring back wonderful memories of our special week together in Paris.
If you want to go further afield, I would also suggest Florence or Rome, Barcelona would also be good. I agree with Kay who commented that March isn't the best time to visit Greece and I feel the same about Croatia, Slovenia and most of eastern Europe - wonderful places to visit, but March isn't the month to see them at their best. Interesting places I've visited in March also include Malta and Marrakech, perhaps a little further than you want to go but worth a thought if you want something out of the ordinary and certain to be memorable. Both easy to reach from London, easy to visit on your own, lots of interesting places to visit and great food.

My daughter is living in the UK this year in grad school and I am also flying over to visit her (from Boston) in March. We've done a lot of this kind of thing though since this is her fourth time working or studying in Europe. Last month I went over and (in addition to time in Lodnon) we flew to Rome (both Easyjet and Ryanair go). Last year we did Barcelona. This coming March we are probably doing southern Spain. Lots of options. In March though the best weather will most likely be in southern Spain or southern Italy. In previous years I've had some beautiful weather in London and Paris but also had some pretty cold weather.
Besides the whichbudget site go directly to Easyjet.com and Ryanair.com and see where they go in March. A lot of their routes don't start until April, so while they technically do fly there, they don't do it when you need to go.
So far this winter is very cold in the UK (my daughter said she heard it was the worst in a thousand years! - while that might be an exaggeration it is cold and snowy so your daughter may need some warmth by March).

Thanks, I did not realize that a lot of routes are seasonal.I think that at this point, we are leaning towards going to Italy.(Thanks for the suggestions).
Now we have to figure out what we can see, in what order, etc.
I would like to spend a couple of days in London so that I can visit my daughter's school , etc- so any thought on whether I should meet her in London and then travel to Italy together and then home from there- or in the other direction- meet in Italy and then I will fly home from London.
I am thinking that there will not be much difference in time or cost?
We are not yet 100% set on Italy, so if any of the rest of you have any thoughts or suggestions, based on experience, please chime in!
We are both pretty high energy and want to visit as much as we can in the time that we have- of course making sure that we see more than just the very bare surface.
