Travel from Interlaken to Lake Como

Does anyone know the best train routes from Interlaken to Lake Como? We are going to be traveling that route in May, 2012 and we're looking into trains or renting a car. I know that there will be a hefty drop off charge for the one-way car rental but thought it might be better to enjoy the sights along the way. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do this a fair amount seat61.com/switzerland train to Lugano
Shuttle down the shore of Lake Lugano to Menaggio mid lake
Como 12 euros.Grand Hotel Menaggio especially nice there.
Verenna and www.bellagio.info are the prettiest.Last year a
mid-lake ferry pass cost 11 euro I toured around all day and
night. In the past have rented a car lots more money parking
super expensive and a hassle.Prefer the train easy and cheap.

Happy Travels!

Thank you for the information qwovadis. I had looked at train routes and one goes back to Lucerne and the other goes to Speitz. Not sure which one is best but will continue to research it. Which route to you take? Thanks again.

The Luzern and Spiez/Brig routes each take from 5 to 6 hours. Each has only two changes if you plan it that way. I find the luzern route more scenic; you go through the Gotthard tunnel and some shorter ones, but the other way has two loooong tunnels, the Lötschberg and the Simplon.

On the other hand, with the Spiez route you have option, if you are interested in scenic trains and don' mind a few more changes, of leaving the train at Domodossola and taking the CentoValli railway to Locarno, changing there for Lugano and then to Como San Giovanni.

If your destination is Varenna on the other side of the lake, best stay onnthe Spiez/Brig train to Milan, where you catch a train to Varenna. If you are going tomBellagio you can go by ferry from either Como or Varenna.
