Travel between Positano and Venice
Hi folks, we are planning a trip and are going to be staying the first few nights in Positano (traveling there from Naples) before heading up to Venice for a couple of days. I was wondering what might be the best way to get from Positano to Venice. So far I have been looking at the train and from Naples to Venice seems to be the easiest way. We had considered flying, but honestly, with the travel to and from the aiport, checking in, waiting, worrying about luggage, we decided the train would be more leisurely (we are on holidays after all). Are we correct in assuming Positano to Naples to Venice would be the best route to take? Any other suggestions? Any help would be great. Thanks so much for your input.

Of course, you're on holiday, not on a rushed business trip, so definitely forget the hassle of flying.
The two options are Naples to Venice (with bus Positano to Sorrento for Circumvesuviana railway to Naples) or Salerno to Venice with bus Positano-Salerno. Either works.
Www.trenitalia.com for the online train ticket from €19

Last year I did an overnight trip from Rome to Positano. On the way there, we took the train to Naples and then the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, and then a cab to Positano, whew! On the way back however, we went through Salerno, which involved much fewer connections. Instead of a bus, I would highly recommend the 45 minute ferry from Positano to Salerno. It's a gorgeous ride with views of Amalfi, Ravello, Vietri sul Mare. Once you get off of the ferry, it's a leisurely 10 minute walk to the train station. Sure, the train was delayed a hour once we left, but it was easy! The ferry schedule is here: http://www.coopsantandrea.com/. You can buy tickets day of at the ticket counter a few hours before your intended departure. I am not certain about the Salerno to Venice, so you will want to check the Trenitalia website. I think I saw a trip that takes about 5.5 hours with one change in Rome. Hope this helps!

It's 5.5 hours from Naples to Venice (Santa Lucia, main dead-end station in Venice with always it seems a change of trains in Rome. And it will take you two hours to get to Naples train station from Positano either via Sorrento or Salerno.
Man in Seat 61 says tickets from 19 euros at www.trenitalia.com - does this mean for both trains - 19 euros Naples to Venice - as would you have to book two 19 euro trains?
Just curious - if anyone knows be clear it up for me.

many naples to venice train links involve a change of trains at Bologna - one of the neatest cities I've seen in Italy - put bags in station baggage deposit and spend a few hours to break your journey in one of Italy's oldest-looking and sweetest-looking cities perhaps!

THanks all for the speedy (!) replies - will look in to both options of naples and salerno and compare prices. Also PalenQ that sounds neat... if it worked out timewise it would be great to see another city... any recommendations for just a few hours there?

Well just head to the Centro Storico (sp?) or historical city center and stroll around - here are many arcaded old streets and the university - Bologna is said to have more certified medieval buildings than any city in Italy, I read. So besides the cathedral - the usual highlight of Italian cities just stroll around - the train station is about a mile from the city center if I recall correctly.

Positano dp 16.40 or, may be a bit risky: 17.50

Man in Seat 61 - I have lpooked at many fares for the next few months and see no 19 euro Naples to Venice fare but only 39 as the cheapest and relatively few of them - mainly 59 and full fare, I presume, of about 85.
Where are your touted 19 euro fares?
