Trastevere in Rome

Is it possible to stay at a hotel or apartment in the Trastevere section of Rome?

Of course on may get lodging there. I'd prefer Trastevere over many areas in Rome that are quite a ways from the old center and that don't offer anything in return. Now, what are your priorities?

There aren't more than a handfull of hotels in Trastevere. The better located ones are the 2-star Cisterna and the 1-star recently renovated (so I've heard) Manara. Trastevere is more of a residential area. The offer of appartments should therefore be much larger than hotels. I'd prefer something in the vicinities (300 meters radius) of Piazza Sta. Maria in Trastevere and would prefer it toward the river, than to the opposite side. From this particular area, one may easily stroll to the la Bocca della Verità, Marcellus theatre, Ghetto and Campo de' Fiori. Stretching it a bit, one may also "hit" piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Bus transportation to/from St. Peters wouldn't be a problem. The area is relatively off center with respect to the other sites and public transportation could be somewaht awkward. Say, most probably to get to Piazza di Spagna one would have to take 2 buses or have a long stroll instead.

If your priority is to be in the center of Rome's nightlife (regarding restaurants and bars), this is IMO the right place. If, on the other hand, you're planning to spend most evenings elsewhere (Piazza di Spagna/Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Navona, etc) and unless you plan to spend on taxis, you'd be better off elswhere.

Paulo

It's been a few years, 10 to be exact but on our last trip to Rome we stayed in the Trastevere (across the Tiber) part of Rome. We stayed at the Hotel Amalia, via Germanico,66. An adequate room, bath across the hall. However, we did not request a QUIET room and so the streetcars did keep us awake. When we go to Rome again we'll definitely stay in the Trastevere. On previous trips we stayed in the area of the Spanish Steps but we find the Trastevere much more "homey".

Richard, trastevere does mean across te Tiber ... but not everything that's on the other side of the river is in the Trastevere quarter. The Amalia hotel referred by you, for instance, is in the Vatican area. The Trastevere quarter lays south-southeast from the Vatican (a mile or so) and west-southwest from the Tiber Island.
Paulo
Hi Thomas,
We love the Trastevere district, but as mentioned it is mostly residential - which is what makes it so nice. We (& other friends) have stayed at the Hotel Arenula which we love. It's reasonably priced (including breakfast), spotless, quiet and very close to Trastevere. . The hotel is actually on a narrow quiet sidestreet 1/2 block off Via Arenula. You just walk a block down Arenula to the river and cross the bridge into the Trastevere. Really handy to Piazza Navona and on the edge of the interesting old Jewish ghetto. Easy to hop on a bus at the corner to go directly to the Vatican which saves one's legs for the days walking. Enjoy!
To Paulo, Richard, Lee. thank you for the info on Trastevere. We want to be in the heart of T, preferably in an apt studio or 1BR for a week, sort of living like an italian (my wife's heritage) amongst italians. Sounds corny. I'm trying to print out your replies. No luck yet.

Judy,
What topping means, is that you bring a thread back up to the head of the list again. You do it by posting a message at the end of the thread.
I topped this thread, because someone named Edwin was seeking info on the Trastevere area. And by topping it, he would be more likely to notice the thread.
Have fun at this site!
