Transportation to Dulles
Has anyone taken the metrobus from L'Enfant Plaza to Dulles? I'm flying out of Dulles to Milan, and this new bus option is so cheap ($1.10?) close to my office, but I don't know anyone who's used it. (Forgive my posting this in Europe. I looked first in the US forum, but I think the calculus for how to get to the airport is different if you're on your way out of your own town -- I'd rather save my money here and spend it on wine and gelato there.)

I planned on using the same service myself and it is very cheap. I first heard about it here. The person gave the website and phone number. They seem to be very please with the service. You might just do a search and see what you come up with. I know I saw it in the last 6 months.

I'd suggest taking the Metro (subway) Orange Line from L'Enfant Plaza to the West Falls Church station when you can catch a shuttle bus directly to the Airport. Note that the L'Enfant Plaza station is a transfer point to the Yellow, Blue, Green, and Orange Metro Lines. The Metro works much faster and more directly to Dulles than a bus traveling along Route 66. DC's Metro line is one of the newest in the country and since I used to rid it daily to commute to Capitol Hill from Reston, VA, I can attest to its comfort and speed over any city bus than may or may not be air conditioned and will surely suffer grid lock in traffic jams around Tysons Corner. The Metro might cost you more than the base bus fare of $1.10, it's $2.35 in rush hour, and $2.10 during non-peak times. According to DC Rideguide, plan on 1+ hour ride on the 5A Metro Bus compared to 27 minutes on the Metro. Check out the Metro's web site yourself for details, http://www.wmata.com/. Have fun since Dulles is a very busy airport. It's handling much more than it was originally built for.

We had an early morning flight out of Dulles on a Saturday. We took Metro to West Falls Church and found out the Washington Flyer bus didn't start running until after our flight was leaving. There were no cabs at the Metro station that early, so we had to call a cab. We just made it to the airport in time. Make sure you check the schedule for any bus that you're taking.

Thanks all. I found a blurb about the express service from L'Enfant Plaza to Dulles (with stops only in Rosslyn and Herndon) at the Washington Post's website (http://yp.washingtonpost.com/E/E/WAS...64/02/cs1.html). It looks like it's worth a try. Louise - Thanks for the advice on the Metro. I know the metro is nicer in many ways than the bus, but I just like the idea of walking two blocks to the bus, plopping down, and arriving at the terminal in an hour, all for $1.10. (I usually just drive to Dulles, but 12 days at $6 a day in the economy lot would buy a lot gelato!)

Just by happenstance, I plan to use this new metrobus service in tow days, for my flight from Dulles to Frankfurt, and on to Budapest. (That is assuming Lufthansa is not on strike!!) I agree with the above poster, that if you are starting close to L'enfant Plaza, it is easier just to get the bus the whole way. Any time saved on the metro would be used up waiting for the bus in West Falls Church. If starting from another metro stop - say for example Farragut West - then it would make more sense not to backtrack and take the subway to W Falls Church.

Just in case anyone else is interested in this, I used this Dulles Express Bus two weeks ago and it worked great. It truly does only cost $1.10, and drives from L'Enfant Plaza to Dulles, stopping only in Rosslyn and Herndon. It left L'Enfant promptly at 2:30 (don't be late!) and arrived at the terminal at 3:25, exactly as scheduled. Presumably during rush hour it's more crowded and traffic makes the timing less reliable, but at least mid-day this was a great way to get to Dulles.
