The Côté D’Azur has some of the best public transport and the worst roads in Europe - from memory take the main tram out of the airport and change once you hit the main coastal tram line - again from memory I think it’s less than e5 each way.
In summer forget either buses or taxis - the roads are extremely busy.

If during the hours the train is running, you take the tram free from the terminal to the Grand Arenas stop (first or second stop, depending on the terminal). You then walk 400 to 500m? perhaps to the San Augustin train station (there are now signs) and take the train. Note that the main Gare is a bit of a distance to the old town.
There are also direct buses from the Aeroport, including ones that run pretty late. The Express is from Terminal 2, Bus 250 (Regional Bus, destination Vallauris -- multiple stops). Also from Terminal 1, Bus 200 (Direction Cannes) is the slowest and I think the cheapest and is taken from main Aeroport/Promenade stop across the parking lot/drop off zone (on the main road). It gets you closer to the old town only because there are so many stops. N200 is the late night version.
Now, if you are planning in advance, the train and bus hub is moving to a new multimodal bus/train/TGV station at Grand Arenas, from sometime in the second half of this year (this is France, so that completion date means nothing). The train station I believe is one of the first things to open. The bus station opens later. This simply would be to the left/west of the tram stop, instead of a longer walk to the east.
