You have choices. You can take a direct bus from the airport to Piraeus or you can take the Blue Line Metro into town to the Monastiraki Station and then transfer to the Green Line to Piraeus.

Thanks, Lee, any idea how long this will take? On return from Hydra we want to fly to Santorini, so need to book ferry & flight with this in mind. We still do want to have that drink with you in Santorini!

Either way will take you about an hour. There's an express bus, #E96. The Blue Line Metro takes about 45 minutes to get to Monastiraki, and from there it's just a few minutes to Piraeus but you obviously have to wait for the next train, probably no more than 5 minutes.
See you in Oia.

Is the Metro station in Piraeus a long distance from where the cruise ships actually dock (assuming they all dock in the same general area/wharves in Piraeus)? We may have to do this trip in reverse in August and I am wondering if this would be better than taking a taxi all the way to the airport.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Truthfully I've never had to find out because I always fly to the islands, but judging by the maps I've seen the Piraeus Metro Station is only a short walk from the ferry piers. If you've got a lot of baggage you can take a taxi from the metro station instead of from the airport. The Airport Express Bus would be another good alternative. I'm sure it goes right to the piers and they are very frequent as well as inexpensive.

In October I walked out of the Piraeus subway stop, across the street and onto the Blue Star Ferry I was taking to Santorini.
It seemed like the 4 or 5 docks right outside the train station were being used by whatever boat was sailing. There were a couple of other company's ships boarding right next to the Blue Star Ferry.
There was a taxi stand outside the subway stop so you could cab the last part if your ship wasn't right across the street.

By the way the subway fare from the airport is 8 euro for one person, 12 euro for two, 16 for three. That ticket will get you all the way to Piraeus as long as you don't exit the subway system.
Doing the return you'll want to make sure you buy a ticket that goes all the way to the airport at the same price as coming in.
I had an all day pass that said it was good for a one-way trip to the airport. I found out the hard way that the day pass was for a trip to the airport by bus only! OK it wasn't that hard of a lesson. Just a 10 euro fine.

The ferry docks are right across the street from the subway station.
The cruise ships are in the same harbour but are on the other side from the Ferry docks.
We walked there in about 13 minutes from the subway but remember you will have luggage and it is hot.
Probably a three minute cab ride. You have to turn left left from the ferry docks on the street (keeping the ferries on your right hand side) around the docks to get to the Cruise port.

Judy- we also traveled from Hydra to Santorini. Our travel agent arranged for a car transfer, which was no doubt pricier than the bus/subway options. But your original post did ask for the "easiest" option, and this has to be it. In case you are interested, the driver picked us up at Piraeus where we got off the Flying Dolphin and drove us straight to the airport. We also did it in the opposite direction (coming from Mykonos to Hydra). He picked us up at the airport and dropped us off at the dock for the ferry. Our costs were all bundled together, so I'm not sure exactly how much this was.

Thanks, europhile, we haven't ruled that out. I've e-mailed George, the taxi driver, noted on Matt Barrett's site. For four of us, that may be the best option. He's 55 Euros for four of us and it may well be worth it for the convenience....not to mention we'll be jet-lagged on arrival!
