I understand I can take a train from Kings Cross station to Edinburgh, Scotland( Did I spell the city correctly?) Anyway, Britrail in the US wants $130USD one way. Does anyone know The fare if I buy it in London? Two OAP's and a 16 year old will be traveling in June. Thank you.

Marie: Last month Edinburgh to London (single, not return) cost around 70 pounds. BUT I've been told that you can get it somewhat cheaper if you book in advance. That was too costly for me, I ended up taking an overnight bus/coach for 20 pounds. <BR>There are websites where you can find such fares but I dont have them offhand. Hope this helps. Emily

If you want to get a return or a round-trip as you would call them in America, then the trains will be cheaper as single fares are not always half the price of the return fare. <BR>So, book ahead is the advice. <BR>www.thetrainline.com is a good place to go, as is www.gner.co.uk, G N E R being the train firm that operates that route. The journey is about 4.5 hours long and the trains are generally smart, fast and clean so a good, cheap, pre-booked ticket means good value for money. <BR>If you need to talk to someone, try calling 44 8457 225 225 to talk to G N E R or 44 8457 222 333 to talk to the Train Line. Seeing as your travelling companions might benefit from cheaper fares, the phone call might be worth it. The lines are open from 0800 to 2200 U K time. <BR>Also try flying cheaply. www.easyjet.com or www.go-fly.com will help you here. One way fares can be as low as £40 including taxes. THe airports they use in 'London' are a bit out of the way but have good train and bus links. <BR>My preference would be by train as you can move about, see the countryside and speak to people. <BR>However, it might be too early yet to book train tickets for June. It might be they won't let you book till 8 weeks beforehand, but that is usually enough to secure cheap tickets.

Try gner.co.uk (the people who operate the train), but they don't go on sale but about 8-10 weeks prior to travel. I just booked a bargain fare, London to Edinburgh and return, for mid-February for 36 GBP. If you look early, there are good rates. June's probably higher, but ought to be less than you've found.
