When our family gets to the Rome airport approximately how long will it take to get to Rome via the train? We arrive around 9:00 in the morning. My family of 4 and myself will be heading to Viareggio after we get to Rome. I was trying to get an idea of how much time it will take getting through customs etc to get to Rome. From everything most people say is that we should NOT get train reservations but I would like to have some of the train information available so I don't feel totally inept. We are thinking about taking the ES but since we need reservations, hopefully we will be able to get tickets at the train station?

Is there any kind of a student discount? I didn't see anything on theTrenitalia website but thought I heard of something like that before but then again maybe it was a student rate for something else?

There was also a thread answering a lot of questions regarding traveling by train. Does anybody know where I can read it . I apologize if these questions are redundant!

The Leonardo Express train from FCO to Roma Termini takes 30 minutes and departs every half hour on the :07 and :37.

At the FCO train station, you can buy the tickets not only to Roma Termini, but also for your trip onward to Viareggio. By then you will be sure which train you can make, being sure to allow about 15 minutes of time to find your way from the the Leonardo Express to your departure platform.

You can view Schedules at the main Trenitalia website. Pick 10:00AM as your departure time from Roma Termini. While I doubt you'll be there for that time, you will get a listing of all the train for the next few hours. I'd print the list for reference, but wait to purchase the tickets in Rome.

I think for student discounts you have to be currently enrolled in an Italian school and possess soggiorno....but I could be wrong, it's been awhile since I was a student

If your family includes younger children, you may qualify for the family discount shown at the link mentioned earlier.

The regular ES train doesn't go to Viareggio. You would have to take it to Florence and change trains (to an R train). You want the EScity train which goes up the coast (Civitavecchia/Grosseto/Livorno/Pisa) if you don't want to change trains.

The Family discount will only apply if your children are between the ages of 4-12. Otherwise, if you are Non-EU citizens, discounts are not as available. The AMICA fares are pretty much gone. There are "supersaver fares" but they are limited to specific runs and you DO have to buy your tickets in advance. I'd recommend against buying tickets in advance, unless you can save some big $$$ and only if give yourself PLENTY of time to get out of FCO. If you have to "change" your ticket due to being late, you'll lose your discount AND have to pay a ticket-change charge. It's a roll of the dice you don't control.... I'd probably wait until I got to the train station at FCO to buy my tickets.
