train travel in France and Italy
I want to travel by train for 3 days in the French Riviera area. (staying in Nice) then travel to Cinqua Terra for 3 days (Corniglia) then back to Genoa to pick up a car rental to drive to Lake Garda. What are the cheapest options? A rail pass is $680.00!

SNCF: THE "ISABELLE" RAIL PASS: IN SUMMER SEASON
From July 1st to September 30th, the SNCF's "Carte Isabelle" enables passengers to make an unlimited number of trips in any one day on all trains offering seats (except TGV express trains) in 1st or 2nd class, from Théoule-sur-Mer to Vintimiglia and from Nice to Tende.
On sale at the train stations: €12.
Trains in Italy are inexpensive. Try Italian rail.
Isabelle is a great ticket, used it many times for day returns all around Nice area from Cannes to Vintimiglia and also for a dat trip to Tende (beautiful scenic journey Alps)

The Italian train company is Trenitalia. The train from Corniglia to Genoa is 6€ - 10€ depending on train. Trains between the CT towns will be a few euro. Trains from Nice to Corniglia will be around 20€ to 50€ depending on train. The French and Italian rail companies don't make it easy to price the trains between them unless they are high speed or overnight trains. You may have to look at the French rail site for trains from Nice to the border and then the Italian rail site for the Italian border to Corniglia.

Use www.trenitalia to book from Ventimiglia (on the border, where the Italian trains start) to Monterosso in Cinque terre. Then buy a 5 euro local train ticet Nice-Ventimiglia at Nice station, no reservation needed, train every 30 minutes.
