train to St., Tropez?
My husband and I will be staying in Gemenos for the first 2 nights of our trip. He usually likes to go to Cassis but after seeing a travel show on TV has an interest in going to St. Tropez. We would go there on Sept. 1, if we go. Does anyone know if it's possible to go to Toulon, etc. and take a train or boat into St. Tropez and thus avoid all the traffic hassle? Many thanks.

Will you be staying at the Relais de la Magdeleine? If so, ask the owners about the easiest way to get to St-Tropez. I don't think you can do it by train, and you're right to want to avoid the headaches of driving.

There's indeed no train station in St. Tropez.
The fastest/easiest would probably be taking the train in Cassis to Toulon (34 min. by direct train) and then further by bus to Saint Tropez (Sodetrav bus service, 2 hrs 10 min.).
Or train Cassis - Hyères (1 hr 8 min. by direct train) and Sodetrav bus, 1 hr 35 min.
I would strongly advise against driving through Toulon as traffic can get extremely dense!
For train connections, see http://plannerint.b-rail.be
For Sodetrav bus schedule, see http://www.sodetrav.fr/lignesinterurbaines.htm

Underhill, your're absolutely right- we're staying at the Relais de la Magdeleine. We were there 2 yrs. ago and loved it. The only snare was a lack of english speakers. The owner was very gracious and between her very limited but enthusiastic attempts at English and my feeble attempts at French we got the gist of the info. It appears that the train isn't a great option. If a bus is necessary I would assume that it's a real slow go for them as well. The boat idea seems intriguing. Thanks, everyone.

I believe the best way to St Troppez by rail is to St Rapahel and thence by bus from there to St Tropez (80 mins). If coming from the west then get off at Hyeres and hop a bus (100 mins) to St Tropez. But in Hyeres the only info i have is that buses leave from the Gare Routiere and not the Gare SNCF like in St Raphael - thus if this is not by the train station in Hyeres it may be better to go on to St Raphael and thence by bus. (Bus service is equally frequent from either Hyeres Gare Routiere or St. Raphael's Gare SNCF - about every two hours but not at regular intervals. And then there is also the boat services.

Underhill, I agree with you about Bormes and Le Lavandou (been there for 10 days this June). But ... it's NOT Saint-Tropez! Saint-Tropez will always have that special appeal, even on me although I've been there at least a fifty times over the past 30 years.
